Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Brad_friedel_ap

The funeral march for Fulham’s life in the English Premier League is in full swing.

The Cottagers’ tie vs. Derby has all but assured that the American army of Fulham players will be dispersing come the summer. As if the poor result wasn’t enough, having Clint Dempsey and Carlos Bocanegra sit on the bench all match provided insult to injury for American fans of Fulham.

It wasn’t all bad news for Americans abroad. Nate Jaqua continued his takeover of Austria with another goal while Danny Szetela saw more playing time for Brescia, clocking 35 minutes in a victory. The battle of American goalkeepers between Marcus Hahnemann and Brad Friedel ended, as you would expect, in a scoreless draw.

  1. + Had 2 Assists . that is what everyone saw and reported.

Rossi turned provider this evening, with two crosses from the left-hand side setting up the two goals. Impressive and energetic performance; kept Atleti’s defenders ever so busy.

-> Ives if you are going report on Rossi. atleast get it right

  2. You shoulda written Jaqua continued his anschluss of Austria, rather than his takeover. That would have been funnier.

  3. Jaqua was always one of my favs… i was sad to see him leave the fire, but glad to see him excelling…

whether austria is easier or harder, hard to compare truely…. the change of style could be the reason… just as there are players who excel in england but fail in spain or someone who excels in italy but fails in England (truely just add leagues in either spot)…

  4. Is Austria just plain easier than MLS? That works out well for Jaqua. He’s awful, yet he has 5 goals in 10 matches in Austria and is probably making at least double his MLS salary.

Amazing how that works out, a useless player hear plays in a league with less talent and hence becomes useful while still making more money.

I hate Jaqua, so I never thought I’d say this…but good for him.

don’t forget Michael Orozco – San Luis…per Luis Blanco at Sidelineviews:https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=5437561489188679737&postID=1645689638291983147&page=1

“In his first game back with San Luis, Orozco started and played 83 minutes in a 2-0 loss to Jaguares. The setback kept San Luis from slicing into Chivas’ lead in both Group 3 and the overall league table. San Luis sits in second place in both, with 22 points from 12 games. Orozco has played seven games this season for a total of 451 minutes. He has two yellow cards as well as a red card this year.”

  6. Sorry to change the subject, but DuNord has posted (w/ no story link) that Mexico fired Hugo Sanchez – anyone got a 2nd on that?

You think Westberg would be an upgrade to Busch?

I think Busch is an excellent goalkeeper, or at least he was. Give him a chance. I was shocked that he was not a starting keeper for someone.

  8. Do you think it would be possible for MLS to acquire Quentin Westberg on loan? As a Fire fan I would like to see an upgrade on Busch and it doesn’t look like Westberg is going to be the starter at Troyes going into next season.

  9. Ossington,

As an expat geordie, take it from me…never place your faith in Laurent Robert. However, it is amusing that John Carver is targeting all the old mags. Pretty soon TFC is going to be lining up Phillipe Albert and Temuri Ketsbaia.

Not entirely off topic (but kinda), looks like Rohan Ricketts and Laurent Robert may be running the wings for TFC.

    Godwilling.

My fingers are crossed, i think there is still some talent in Robert and Ricketts could do some damage as well (granted i havent seen him in a number of years so hes entirely speculation, HA. Thats not to mention anyone is better on the wing then what we currently have…)

I’m sure it was all in good fun. We know it can’t be easy rushing to get so much information out at one time. I think most people would prefer getting the information quickly instead of later with less chance of typos.

  12. Anyone know why Freddy Adu did not even dress? And when is Jeremiah White going to get a shot w the USMNT? We got nothing else going up front for us. Altidore, and hs only played twice. And thats about it, lets give this guy a chance.

  13. That Keller had to make 10 saves against Derby tells you all you need to know about how Fulham’s defense is playing.

  14. If I were an SCR Altach fan I would be very happy with the Jacqua acquisition. He’s scored a goal every other game, and is now their 3rd leading scorer (#1 = 8 goals in 24 games; #2 = 5 goals in 19 games; Jacqua = 4 goals in 8 games).

No, it’s not the best league in the world (as RBNY fans know…) but to make an impact like that helps the image of American soccer abroad. And yet, in some of the Altach and Austrian Bundesliga pages he’s listed as “Jonathan Jacqua.” Hope they fix that…

  16. Sad to say – but Herenveen actually lost to Ajax.

I fear Fulham is going to be put to the sword pretty much by their own manager. Hodgson is past his prime.

That said – this was going to happen sooner or later. It seemed Fulham was obsessed with signing players on the cheap, and not developing much young talent.

In the long run, blowing up the current roster might be better for them…even if it means relegation.

  17. Watford’s been dropping points. The chances that DeMerit will be back in the Prem next year are getting slimmer.

    Why didn’t Freddy dress?
