SBI MLS Goal of the Week: Nyassi does it

There was no shortage of quality goals this week as several highlight-reel-worthy strikes helped give MLS week one a sorely-needed boost.

I will bring you my pick for the three best each week and this week there were so many good ones that a few quality goals didn’t make the cut, including Cuauhtemoc Blanco’s late equalizer vs. Real Salt Lake or Omar Cummings goal against Colorado.

SBI goal of the week honors for week one go to New England’s Sainey Nyassi, who’s beautiful interception, run and finish served as the best moment in a masterful performance by New England on Saturday. Here is the goal:

  1. Clark”s ability to beat a “quality” defender, stay on his feet and find the short corner. His pace made the 2nd defender look like he was standing still as he went past him.

  3. I dunno about Moffet’s goal. Yes, nicely placed, but it looks like it took a lucky bounce over the goalie’s hand.

The Colorado goal was a nice move, but the best part was seeing the LAG goalie afterwards clearly shout “f&*$!”

  4. Nyassi’s goal by a mile. .. Shucks .. if he scores like that against the Red Bulls we’re in for a losing series against the Revs.

  5. The amount of exciting, young, american, attacking wide players in this league is really increasing. Alverez, Holden, Rogers, and Clark are all very good players and are really adding a sense of creativity and skill on the wings that Americans havn’t shown in numbers before.

  6. I’d give #3 to Blanco. It was a one-time shot on a ball bouncing out of the box that he had to track back to line up. Then he perfectly placed it in the corner. Moffat had much more time with the ball. Plus, Blanco’s strike was in injury time and resulted in Chi taking a point in an away match. Moffat’s goal was workmanlike; Blanco’s was artistry. That guy is just so incredibly skilled.

  7. Nyassi’s goal was astonishing. The other goals are not in the same class.

I give Colin Clark credit but his goal was as much mistakes by everyone else as it was a great play on his part. Xavier flubs a tackle. The next Galaxy defender practically watches Clark go by. Then Cronin, who I thought was supposed to be a good goalkeeper, made a huge mistake by not stuffing Clark’s shot at his feet. Cronin was standing in his goal watching this develop. Once he saw Clark cut inside the second defender he should have been at his feet giving him nowhere to shoot. Bad goalkeeping by Cronin in this game. If Cannon was still in goal for the Galaxy they would have lost 1-0 at the most.

  8. I’m with you ives. I’m a TFC supporter, and I Thought Edwards would have had to make an incredible save to keep that out. If you watched the full game, you would have noticed how strong the winds were. That factor definitely helped propel that strike.

  9. Blanco’s goal was great, but how does that qualify him for your POW nod earlier. That shot was the only damn thing he did all game. For the most part he was shut down all game (by a RSL defense you’re “not convinved” about)until he came across a lucky rebound.

Can we expect this Blanco leg-humping all season?

  10. That PK did indeed set the standard for weak rollers. The viewing angle doesn’t help here in determining the speed of Moffat’s shot, but in any case, I just prefer Blanco’s goal myself.

  11. Joamiq, the Moffat shot moved faster than you’re giving it credit for. That thing was hit hard, was not a “weak roller”. A weak roller was the Petter Villegas penalty kick attempt eight years ago for the MetroStars.

  14. The stepover while on the sprint before the magnificent shot was something to behold. I knew Mansally was going to be good but Nyassi has shown he’s going to be a force in this league. Great stuff.

  15. The clips show up for me. The Nyassi goal was just brilliant. A better angle by FSC would have shown how nice of a stepover that was and how he rocketed it where Onstad couldn’t touch it. He also had a great pass to set up Mansally’s shot for the first goal.

  16. Nyassi’s goal was just tremendous… I know its just one weekend, but the quality of teams that over the past several years have looked regularly bland (New England) or average (Columbus, Colorado, Kansas City) put on some exciting and technically strong displays.

Side note – Just a tough night for DCU I hope.
