Euro 2008 Final: Spain vs. Germany (Your Running Commentary)

Spain_flag Germany_flag

Good afternoon everybody. Today’s the day we have been waiting a month for. The European Championship final between Spain and Germany (2:45, ABC).

In one corner you have Germany, the pre-tournament favorites who have looked very strong in the knockout rounds after a less than stellar group stage showing. In the other corner is Spain, which is unbeaten in the tournament and stands poised to erase decades of tournament futility.

The big story heading into the match is Michael Ballack’s availability. To the surprise of nobody, Ballack is going to start today. Spain is not as lucky and will not have tournament goal-scoring leader David Villa, who is out with a leg injury. As expected, Cesc Fabregas has replayed Villa in Spain’s starting lineup.

If you will be watching today’s final (and who isn’t?) please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

Enjoy the match.

Anybody else see Sergio Ramos honoring his former teammate Antonio Puerta with the shirt he had on during the celebrations? Pure class.

Spain deservedly are European Champions as they were the class of the tournament. They played great soccer, and at every position they oozed class.

Their midfield dominated the Germans (including the chippy, outclassed Ballack). The difference between this team and other Spanish teams in the past, though, was their middle through their defense: Senna, Pujol and Casillas. There are no better than those three at their positions.

I’ll have to hand it to you Ives, you called Spain’s domination from the beginning and you couldn’t have been more right. It was a joy to watch and support them this tournament!

congrats to Spain… wonderful display! Did anyone else watching miss the Lehman excursion/handball due to Thunderstorm updates in the Boston area? Terrible. I had to endure the various comments about how this would never happen during a Patriots game… It’s tough being an American soccer fan some days and trying to defend the coverage.

!que viva espana! what a well played, beautiful tourney for them. it’s great to see a world class soccer nation finally get the result they deserve. also good to see the best team win.

Great to see the best team win a major tournament, that doesnt always happen.

Also great vindication for Luis Aragones who has taken Spain to the top, despite being constantly attacked for not including Raul. Without a doubt his convictions for not being swayed in his selections and the style of play he implemented demonstrated the great coach he is.
