Euro 2008: Matchday Four (Group D)

Euro_logo

The European Championship’s last group to play, Group D, opens play today with a pair of appealing match-ups in an underrated group. Spain, one of the favorites to win the tournament (and SBI’s pick), takes on Russia (11:50am, ESPN2) while defending champions Greece open their title defense against Sweden (2:30pm, ESPN2).

Since many of you are at work and won’t be able to watch these matches I will try to do at least one match commentary a day. Today I will be doing a running commentary on the Spain-Russia match so you can follow along here, whether you’re watching the match or at work wishing you could watch.

Feel free to share all your pre-game and in-game thoughts on today’s Group D action in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action.

  1. Decent win for Sweden, they have to love seeing Zlatan get on the board early on. That give-and-go was unstoppable. Goal 2 was awful, run the circus music over that highlight.

I think Greece used up all their magic in ’04

  2. 72nd minute- GOAL SWEDEN. A great pass in to Ljungburg, whose shot is saved, the rebound hit and deflected high. Greece can’t clear it and it winds up in the net. Ugly goal but Sweden will take it.

  3. 67th minute- What a goal from Ibrahimovic. A give-and-go and right-footed blast into the top left corner. Sweden 1, Greece 0.

  4. Come on Spain, the tourney will be much better if they can get on track. Don’t know crap about Russia, but thoroughly enjoyed the Zenit St P’burg run, so anyone from that squad is welcome.

The stadium has a glorious view of the alps beyond, what a great venue. Game on!
