Freddy Adu’s long-rumored move to French club AS Monaco has happened.
Adu is set to leave Benfica and join Monaco on loan, with Monaco holding an option to buy the U.S. Olympic team playmaker.
Adu leaves Benfica after one season, a season which he started strongly but ended with him failing to see any first-team action in the final half of the campaign.
Adu could wind up starting for Monaco if, as expected, the club sells young French playmaker Jeremy Menez, who is drawing interest from several of Europe’s top teams. Menez, 21, is one of the most highly-regarded young midfielders in Europe and appears to be a safe bet to move on, with Inter Milan and Portsmouth among the interested clubs.
Still just 19, Adu is in U.S. Olympic Team training camp and will join Monaco after the Olympics.

I have seen this pattern for young players and it tells you one thing, he has a bad attitude. You have legitamate stars like Saviola and Adriano in this boat.Many clubs, no major contributions.
This means that no coach has the patience to deal with the player and the player is not worth the effort. Or, the player is just hype. I think Adu is marginal as a European player, good as an MLS player. Why would Europe keep a marginal foreigner? Adu has no future in Europe.

This is a good move for Adu in the sense that he will get more playing time. But its hard to see this move as a good sign. Adu doesn’t have to be at the level of Messi, Pato, or Bojan to be a success, but his failure to make the cut at Benfica is yet another reminder that the US has yet to produce a real top quality forward. The bottom line is that it is disappointing that Adu didn’t make it and it should be disappointing for Adu.
Ricardo Gomes is a good coach and recognizes talent. He’ll give Adu opportunities and will demand a lot from him.

I nosed around a bit on Wikipedia trying to get a handle on what Monaco has. Seems that they are abundant in D-Mids, and, with Menez on his way out, there is a real chance that Adu will be able to play in a central attacking role in the midfield. Great for his development!
