NCAA Quarterfinal field is set

NCAALogo

All eight places in the NCAA men's soccer tournament quarterfinals were booked this weekend, with North Carolina earning the last spot in thrilling fashion.

Michael Callahan's 86th-minute equalizer gave the Tar Heels life, then Brian Shriver's 94th-minute game winner set off the celebration as North Carolina knocked off University of Illinois-Chicago, 3-2, on Sunday night.

The Tar Heels became the third ACC school to reach the Elite Eight. Defending NCAA men's soccer champion Wake Forest sent a scary message to the other teams trying to prevent them from repeating after smashing Dartmouth, 7-0, in their round of 16 match on Sunday. Cody Arnoux scored twice while Marcus Tracey delivered two assists to book a place in the Elite Eight, where the Deamon Deacons will face South Florida next week.

Wake joined UNC and Northwestern as teams to book quarterfinal berths on Sunday. Northwesten upset Akron, 1-0, to become the only unseeded team to reach the elite eight.

Here are the quarterfinal match-ups:

  • Wake Forest vs. South Florida (Saturday, 4:30pm)

  • Northwestern vs. North Carolina (Saturday, 2pm)

  • St. John's vs. Indiana (Saturday, 5pm)

  • Maryland vs. Creighton (Saturday, 1pm)

  2. I was hoping that Connecticut and Akron would advance; will support St. John’s now. I haven’t seen much of the tournament yet but hope to see one quarter-final game, both semi-finals and the final.

  3. Looking for the DEMON Deacs to go all the way and bring another College Cup Trophy back to Wake Forest. Don’t believe anyone can beat them if they are on their game which they definitely were today! GO DEACS!

  4. 2 Big Ten Teams, 3 Big East and potentially 2 ACC teams in the final 8. Not bad for the better soccer conferences. WHat happened to the Pac 10?

  5. I think Indiana could make a run. As a SLU fan, it would be nice to see the team that knocked us out win the whole thing! 7-0 is scary though.

  6. I skipped the Northwestern game today due to the 5-9″ of snow that’s starting to fall in the Chicago/Milwaukee area. So, I sure hope that NW gets a chance to take on UIC for the right to go to College Cup.
