If NCAA football had some quality to it and was a breeding ground for future stars, people would probably show up to a match like this. Sadly, it is neither. There are the rare exceptions. However this is nothing more than a glorified AYSO game.

    Sorry for the reality check.

I can’t believe that there are timeouts in NCAA soccer! Maybe one reason US soccer has such a distance to go is that our kids don’t even play by the real FIFA rules.

Just glancing at it, some of these guys are going to be pretty good in MLS. Kassel looks like he definitely should’ve been signed by NYRB already.

For two teams that gave it their all on Friday and have to be tired, I think both teams are doing great and showing quality. Go Terps!

Ives, think there is an issue getting these posts up.

granitza – saying the NCAA doesn’t see top players, at least top american players, is asinine. More than 2/3’s of the players in the current USMNT player pool played some NCAA soccer.

Other than some good corner kicks I really haven’t seen much from Kassel in the run of play. At least not anything that leads me to believe that he is ready to cut it in MLS.

Agreed Jonny. Kassel hit some good balls, but hasn’t shone or anything.

This game – the championship – reminds me of B-level MLS play. Lots of long balls, pretty chippy, big stretches of knocking it back and forth… and then an occasional burst of good play.

NCAA football does have stars and quality to it, you will be able to see that in all the bowl games coming up, NCAA soccer, not so much.

You all are being a bit harsh. This is not MLS – it’s college. Yeah, the defenders are kicking it out; yeah there are some long balls, lots of steals and imprecise passing but these are good players. Give them a break and take it for what it is. These players with a couple of exceptions are not going to play professional soccer so just enjoy it.

    TERPS SCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Hey Chief Jay, Grantiza WAS talking about college soccer when he said college football.

Obviously you have to consider NCAA as a lower division than MLS, and what do you expect, a star at every position???

You’ll see guys from this game down the line, just like the 2005 Terps team that featured Robbie Rogers and Maurice Edu.

NCAA only has timeouts in the final four for TELEVISION only. Timeouts do not happen throughout the season.
As for Granitza, you obviously have no clue.
Just to mention three players that owe a lot to college soccer.
    oguchi
    dempsey
    bocanegra
Where would we be without them?

I don’t know if he was already a 1st rounder, but I’d definitely give Graham Zusi a shot. Kid just won both games of the College Cup with uber-clutch goals.

“””However this is nothing more than a glorified AYSO game.”””

Sorry, but AYSO is better. AYSO doesn’t have timeouts and doesn’t allow unlimited substitutions like the N$CAA.

BTW, Harkes was complimenting Maryland’s #7 at the end of the game because he was running around making life difficult for the NC back four. But, what he doesn’t tell you and what I see all the time is that the #7 sat out much of the second half, came in fresh at the end, so he wouldn’t be able to do that in a FIFA law game, nor is he learning how to do it.

The timeouts were the tradoff to get the games on ESPN. But, thanks for stopping by to follow your sport every once in a while.

“Its the week before finals, who in their right mind, other than players would go?!”

Depends on where your finals are… UNC is done. So are a lot of schools – Ohio St, Wake Forest, UT, etc. Not everyone has finals until the weekend before Christmas. The faculty need time to get their paperwork filed before they take off on holiday, too.

I am in total agreement that not using FIFA rules is ridiculous. That, and get a season that is meaningfully long.

I’ve heard some rumors that a spring season is being considered, hopefully that is more than wishing.

Not using FIFA rules is a bit annoying but lets be serious…
I cant think of a single NCAA sport that matches up totally with professional leagues.
Division one college football has a number of different rules from the NFL
Overtime procedures, one foot in bounds for a catch, length of game, downed without contact, etc.
Same goes for NCAA hoops, college baseball, and the list goes on.
It’s not the EPL, its not MLS, and its not FIFA, its college soccer and appreciate it for what it is.

Goff points out that the mens Final Four can never seem to getthe formula right. WWhen they play at a warm(er) weather site, atterndance lags. When they play in a soccer town, bad weather keeps people away.

I wonder why the women’s Final Four consistently sells out months in advance, before the teams are even determined? This year I think they had a crowd of something like 8500 in Cary. Why can’t the organizers of the mens tourney duplicate that success?
