  1. Moe … Telling someone else what they can and cannot do, when that action has no detrimental effect to outside individuals, is repression, and in my mind against core American principles. A gay man should be allowed to marry a gay man. It doesn’t effect anyone except those two men. If I wanted to pay google to put up ads saying that a black man and a white woman should not be married, I would expect an uproar. Google would most likely not allow it. Freedom of speech does allow “respect marriage” to try to put up ads, and honestly that’s great. It also allows me to say I don’t want to see them. Sorry to bring this discussion to SBI. It’s something that has been pissing me off for a while, and suddenly I see them on my favorite soccer website. Mike

Mikemike, that is exactly what you are doing, telling people what they should do, say and think. YOu feel ok doing that however because you have the veil of political correctness on your side. If you think your idea is better, than advocate for it in the marketplace of ideas, but don’t try to prevent others from expressing their own ideas. That is what America is all about, allowing everyone to express their ideas no matter how much you disagree with them.

  2. “Freedom of speech, guy. There isn’t anything offensive about having a dissenting opinion. Plus it gives this site revenue.”

Actually, it has nothing to do with freedom of speech. When you are a private enterprise, such as SBI, you can choose who advertises on your site. When you choose to allow an advertisement that clearly endorses one side over another, and arguably endorses a hateful attitude towards a group of people, then you are offending both those that disagree with that side of the debate as well as those that are the targets of the hateful attitude. That is not what this site is about and Ives should do more to make sure those types of ads do not show up on his site if he wants to maintain maximum readership.

  4. As a Revs fan, I was both satisfied/disappointed with the result. We almost got away with a win. Were we “outplayed”? Well yes, but DC couldn’t finish until the very end. If I were a DC fan, I would be very concerned that the “superior” team was lucky to tie at home, even with the uneven reffing in their favor.

  5. Matt and James … I am not pissed at Ives, I am pissed at hate speech. Those ads are different than Russian brides, bedding sales or whatever else comes up. “Respect marriage” ads are against liberty, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness. Those ads are against everything America is founded on. If the advertisement come from Google, Ives needs to tell Google that he does not accept hate speech on his site. Mike

Thank you for being the expert on what everyone in this country should say, and what consistutes “American” If you don’t like an idea disagree without, and show that disagreement, don’t just ban it. You are no better than nazi book burners when you do that. Why don’t you try to keep to soccer on this site, and not get all high and mighty.

  6. it’s tempting to call this a just result, even as a new england fan, until i remember that not only was the free kick that set up the equalizer ill-gotten, but there was a deliberate handball in the box in the first half that either blocked a shot or denied ralston a sitter, and it didn’t get called. whether or not it was reflective of the run of play, it should have been 2-1 revs.

  7. I’d hardly say that suggesting (which is all that is) someone respect what many view as a respectable institution (we’ve all heard the greatest status symbol is a long term marriage, or maybe that’s just something I’ve heard different places) like marriage is “hate speech”. I certainly doubt it would qualify in court as such if brought up. My conclusion? Settle down, much ado about nothing.

  9. As for the game, D.C. is by far the most entertaining team to watch in MLS. This is coming from a Crew fan. It’s beyond me how they always manage to throw points away. Kudos to New England for always coming away with results even when they probably don’t deserve them.

  10. Wow. The only thing I find offensive is the ignorance of some of the posters on this site. Ives has no role in what ads are on here. He puts in a code for Google ads, and they semi-randomly select ads taking into consideration keywords, etc. If something on here offends you, read something else. Since when did freedom of speech only apply to people who agree with you?

  12. Hey Ives What’s up with the “respect marriage” advertisements? Those things are offensive. I don’t think you put them up, but tell whoever puts up advertisements to keep them off SBI. That’s not what this site’s about.

Amen. Please Ives. I know that the site needs sponsors, but that garbage is out of control. We really don’t need to look at that when we are coming here to read about soccer.

  13. jtd:

Crowd was pathetic at first; then filed in as the game went on (I have to suspect that the early kickoff, especially on a Friday, effected the late arrivals, because of rush hour traffic, and the fact that the Nats were home tonight). Box score says over 14k, but I would have estimated 16, maybe 17,000 towards the end. LBB, SE, and LN were extremely vocal, contrary to what John Harkes seemed to think. Great tifo by the Screaming Eagles at the beginning (though the Barra Brava have already used it several times, but recycling helps the environment ; ) ).

I don’t know if it’s been the economy or all the bad press about the club and the stadium situation that’s been brining down attendance numbers this year. Last year, on a day like today, and on a friday night against a rival, this game draws at LEAST 19-20k, regardless of the fact that it’s still April. You’re not gonna get much better weather than today, so that excuse can’t be used anymore. I would guess the economy has affected the amount of casual fans or people who go to a few games a year. It’s too bad, because great attendance numbers would really help our bid for a stadium, but I think we’re barely averaging 14k this year (don’t quote me on that; I’m probably wrong).

Hopefully when summer comes, more people will head to RFK. Of course, more wins in games we completely dominate, such as tonight, would certainly help at the box office!

  14. Pleased with the point as a Revs fan– our lineup is still pretty patchwork with Twellman, Reis, Albright, Castro, and Alston on the injury list. Shame we conceded so late, though! That was ALMOST a perfect smash n’ grab. Hats off to Unfrozen Caveman Midfielder for dragging DC back into the game.

“Some people are inferior to others because of the color of their skin.” There are tons of dissenting opinions that are offensive, don’t be daft. That said, click on the respect marriage ads! It’s good for Ives and probably costs those bigots a few cents.

  17. Miikemike: I don’t think anyone puts those ads up there–they’re Google Ads, so they are just placeholders. I believe Google determines what type of ads you’d like by analyzing your search history, and so those ads are tailored for you. Therefore, you and I will both see different ads at any given point in time. Apparently, Google thinks you have no respect for the sanctity of marriage…shame on you!
