Who deserves a call-up that hasn’t received one in 2009?

With the spring World Cup qualifiers in the past, and the loaded summer fixture schedule looming for the U.S. men's national team, it is time to think about new players we might see join the mix this summer.

When you consider the Confederations Cup, World Cup qualifying, and especially the CONCACAF Gold Cup, you can bet that U.S. head coach Bob Bradley will be taking looks at some new faces, and bringing back some familiar ones.

So here's the question. Which players who haven't been called in who you think will or should be called in this summer? Chad Marshall? Jeremiah White? Zak Whitbread? Preston Zimmerman? Robbie Findley?

Share your thoughts and suggestions on the players you would like to see joining the U.S. national team mix this summer in the comments section below.

  1. chad marshall definetly deserves a call-up.

And what about Nate Jaqua? He’s a better target man than Ching. Ives and Ching’s defenders are biased because they love the US and they see him playing hard and believe no one else could play his position. They are WRONG! Ching does so little and the US could get much more out of that postion. We’ve not seen a chance for a counterargument, at least not on the field. Bradley has never played anyone else in a big game, at least in a while.

I don’t hate Ching, just think we have better. Small point- at the game in Nashville, when introducing Ching before the players came onto the pitch, the announcer said Brian Ching but the scoreboard read Brian Chang. oops..

  2. Jeff Larentowicz – he’s been on a steady upward improvement curve from his first day in the Revs lineup; lots of heart, a very hard worker, improving passer and a great, low, hard shot.

  3. One sometimes-overlooked factor in Columbus’ success last year and Seattle’s success so far has been Brad Evans. What about him?

  4. …..sorry, that was .

Convey, Ferrari, White, and Findley are also potentially good rhythm, rhyme, and harmony.

    Matt Reiss?

  5. I echo traces of harmony and counterpoint, the molidic fragments that have been repeated stanza after stanza:

    Adu F – more time.

    Torres JF – more time.

Szetela D, Zizzo S, Holden S in that order.

Davies C, or Cooper K, or Buddle E, up front with Ching or Altidore.

Parkhurst M, Wynne M, Simek F, Spector J, Conrad J, or Marshall C – and/ or try Edu, M. in one of the center back pos.

  6. Most of the posts are MLS heavy. As other have pointed out Gold Cup falls during the MLS season so the smart move for Bradley is to take a look of foreign league based players and not burn his relationship with MLS by depleting their rosters.

I totally echo Adu getting playing time. Also would like to se Edu get some time (they both where good in the Argentina game). I really would like to see more of Davies. (Even though for the first time I was impressed with Ching when he was paired with Jozy in the T&T game I am not sold on him.)

In addition I am Intrigued by:

    Szetela
    Sizzo
    Orozco
    Robles
    Hannehamn

I thought Berckerman got a cap already but maybe it was not the full national side.

  7. Gives these young kids a shot and the 1st team a rest, but throw in a couple of veterans for leadership.

    David Yelldell (GK)

    Marvel Wynne (D)

    Jonathan Bornstein (D)

    Jay Demerritt (D)

    Chad Marshall (D)

    Bryan Arguez (D/M)

    Zak Whitbread (D/M)

    Danny Szetela (M)

    Freddy Adu (M)

    Sal Sizzo (M/F)

    Kenny Cooper (F)

    Robbie Findley (F)

    Jemal Johnson (F)

    Charlie Davies (F)

    Marcus Tracy (F)

    Preston Zimmermann (F)

  8. I definitely think Yuri Movsisyan deserves a call up to the national team. The kid holds the ball well, and has a nose for the goal. In thinking of our 2006 WC performance, we need guys that just have a nose for it. Give the Armenian kid a shot!

And to all you Califf naysayers….he’s NOT the hole in the defense. Stop smoking ‘Gooch and Boca….Boca was let go from Fulham for a very good reason. He is SHAKY.

Also give Bornstein a shot, if he hasn’t had one.

  10. dont see why everyone loves adu. he hasn’t shown to be a proven talent yet just hype. he has bounced from club to club getting minimal playing time. the kid can dribble but all you need is a big body and he cant work. he needs to much help from surrounding players to be put on the pitch

  11. If we send another “B” team to a major completition (see the last Copa America), Bradley should be removed. I understand the love for the Gold Cup, but we need to send our resources down to Africa, and use them sparingly in the Gold Cup.

FYI…If we had not send the A team to the last Gold Cup (which meant the B team went to Venezuala for the CONMBEBOL Championship) we would not be playing in the Confederations Cup this summer which is by far the best preparation for the World Cup available. It also gives us a huge opportunity to raise our FIFA ranking and get a seed in 10′ (that is exactly what Mexico did in the last World Cup).

  12. Chad Marshall has to top the list based on what he brings to the table while Traffic Cone Califf actually getting a WCQ start last week.

  13. definetly mvosisyan great speed, shot, and dribbler, still young. we need to call this guy up, marshall should be called up, and i don’t really get why cooper is called up more he is definetly better than ching.

  14. I think Chad Marshall and Kenny Cooper have deserved call-ups. Marvell Wynne should get some more looks. John Spector should get some more looks. Robbie Rogers and Stu Holden should see some time. Findley should at least be on the radar. If he has a consistent streak he should be called in. Convey played in almost every game under Arena before he deserved it. He now needs to earn a call-up by his play at SJ. We should see Freddy Adu on the pitch in the Gold Cup!

  15. Neven Subotic, Giuseppe Rossi, and that American playing in Hoffenheim. I heard that they have potential to be starters in 2014 and 2018

  17. There are some good players who are not regular national team call ups, but can or may break in.

These are some players to call up during the Gold Cup.

Midfielders- Adu, Edu, Szetela,Sal zizzo Felhaber,Rogers Lee Nguen who is the most underated player on the USA national team.

Goalkeepers- Marcus Hanneman, Kasey Keller, Brad Guzan

  18. David Yeldell. Established starting GK in Bundesliga 2. Consider Heath Pearce plays at the same level & started regularly since the last game. Also consider that Troy Perkins has a recent cap.

Jon Busch also, as the best domestic GK last year, notwithstanding his week 1 laugher.

I concur on Marshall, Orozco & Cooper.

  19. Totally new looks for this year would be Sal Sizzo, Johann Smith and Danny Szetela.

Also Chad Marshall is an obvious choice.

  20. EDSON BUDDLE. Good LOrd! What does the man have to do. He works hard and shows what can be done if you have some good midfielders to help set you up!

Bradley should look at some U-23’s and some U-20’s also for the Gold Cup and future friendlies.

  21. Keep the lineup from the T&T success, except sub Edu in for Mastroeni and, viola, the best team we can field. What about this Charles Kazlauskas (sp?) guy who consistently plays for Top OSS in the Dutch league?

  22. For the horrible and weak left side I would like to bring MIchael Orozco. Playing well in Mexico with undewhelming team who is in playoff picture down there.

  24. I can’t believe you guys are downplaying Rimando so much. 1 bad game against Seattle shouldn’t take him out of the mix. He has been excellent the last 2 years for RSL (although most people wouldn’t know it, since RSL is barely on TV in SLC). I’d love to see him get a shout.

The one I disagree with is Movsisyan. I’m a big RSL homer (and would love to see Robbie get another look), but Movsisyan has yet to prove he can be a reliable scorer. He’s had about 6 chances 1v1 on the keeper already this season…and 0 goals. If he figures out how to finish then by all means call him up, but I don’t see it for now.

  25. With the lack of fullbacks Wynne should definitely get the call. He’s incredibly fast and a very good tackler. I thought he looked good in the Olympics. Charlie Davies also looked good in the Olympics. He’s fast and could provide a spark.

  26. I don’t care who the player is, but as long as he’s playing in the English 3rd division, I want him on my team.

  27. There is no anti-american bias preventing US players from seeing minutes on their Euro clubs’ first teams. The burden is on the player to earn the minutes. Stop making excuses for US players who ride the pine or don’t dress. If you’re good enough, you play. Just like high school.

  28. This sounds nuts in my head as I type this, but I want to see Danny Cepero taken to a national team camp, just to give him a look, build confidence, even if he loses his starting job to Conway, which I wouldn’t agree with in the first place. I think he’s young and has the tools to be a great American keeper one day. His distribution is suspect, and his ball handling as well, with it at his feet.

I still think time as a third string to help build confidence and gain some time with the elite’s of the country would only be beneficial and plus, the RedBulls would be able to evaluate Jon Conway fully and come to a conclusion.

  29. Agree with everyone who’s said Holden, Marshall, and Cooper. Really would like to see Finley get a chance. I’d like to see EJ get a shot now that he’s got some games in Europe under his belt. Davies *has* to get a look with all the goals he’s scoring in Europe.

After that, I’d like to see Robbie Rogers, Michael Parkhurst, Brad Guzan, Marcus Tracy, and Chris Rolfe.

I’m not that interested in seeing Feilhaber, Bornstein, Adu, Wynne, or other guys who are already on the fringes of the team. I want to see the next generation who are going to push those guys off the team. And yes, right now, Freddie is on the fringes of the team until he can show otherwise.

Szetela is an interesting case. He seems to be doing OK at Brescia, but it’s Serie B and if you’ve ever watched it, it’s only marginally better than MLS. It’s hardly him setting Racing Satander on fire like he wanted it to be…

  30. WHo’d i want B.B. to get a better look at (not saying they deserve one but to at least get another look at):

    1) Kyle Beckerman (better him then Mastroeni)and capable of long range blast
    2) Chad Marshall-yesterday, he was the only bright spot for the Crew against RSL and kept Movsisyan under control most of the game
3)Arturo Alvarez- If Rogers can get a look than Alvarez also deserves another look. He is just a pest to cover on the right wing
    4) Michael Parkhurst- doing well and is already an established starter

Players that dont deserve callups (since some ppl here think that just “being on a Euro club roster” means they are automatic callups”:
    1) Feillhaber
    2) Pearce (though he is slowly getting more time)
    3) Rogers (just cant cut it at the national level and the olympics proved just that)
