Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

On a weekend where numerous Americans were up for hardware, two came away victorious while one suffered a heart-breaking loss.

Midfielders DaMarcus Beasley and Maurice Edu did not dress in the Scottish Cup final, but both ended the season with more hardware as Rangers defeated Falkirk 1-0 on Saturday, exactly six days after winning the Scottish Premier League. Edu was out with a knee injury while Beasley was not selected to the gameday roster.

Tim Howard was not so lucky as Everton let an early lead in the FA Cup final against Chelsea slip away. Strikes from Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard were enough to negate a 30th-second Louis Saha goal in the match played at Wembley Stadium.

FC Midtjylland defender Danny Califf scored a goal against Brondby on Sunday. Califf's goal, which came in the 73rd minute, capped the scoring in the 4-2 victory.

What do you think of these performances? Upset that you didn't get to see either Beasley or Edu contribute to Rangers' Scottish Cup win? Disappointed that Howard and Everton fell to Chelsea? Happy to see Danny Califf score a goal just before the United States' World Cup qualifiers?

  1. I am particularly pleased for Clint Dempsey. Finally he is showing his abilities at Fulham. For me, he is the player of the season at Fulham this season.

Hope the form continues and Europe will prove an extended trip for Fulham next season.

Was disappointed with Everton’s defence in the FA Cup final, Tim Howard could not do anything with the two goals that Chelsea scored…

  2. Screw Lleget! Its a Rossi all over again. He didnt even hesitate to say that he would rather play for Italy than the US of A. If he does not want to play for us than i dont want him representing us.

P.S. YAyyyyyyyyyyy Rossi missed a PK today!! May you miss countless more. Better yet, hope you get called to to italian squad at the confederation cup and you miss a pk their.

  3. Mexico doesn’t use away goals in the playoffs. The finals ties are decided by extra time, then penalties I presume. In the earlier two rounds ties are decided by position in the table, and Pumas advanced to the finals with a tie against a team that did worse in the clausura. Provoked some criticism of the system in the Mexican and US Hispanic media, but it does make the regular season count for something.Pachuca got a very late goal in semis to avoid doing the same.

    Oh, yeah, ¡Goya! ¡Goya!// ¡Cachun, Cachun, Ra, RA!// ¡Cachun, Cachun, Ra, Ra!// ¡Goya!// ¡¡Universidad!!

(Even after all the years of watching them on Univision I had to look up the cheer)

  4. Did I miss something? I just switched to the game, and it’s 1-0 Pachuca, or are they showing the aggregate score?

  5. 1-1 in the Pachuca-UNAM off a penalty from Gimenez in the 33rd. Half time at the moment. Torres is on the bench.

  6. He wants to play for Italy but he has to get called up first, something I doubt is very easy at any level. I think he will realize he should be playing for the USA, but let him try. I think he may be eligiable for Argentina as well.

  7. I find it more interesting he said he’d rather play for Italy given the opportunity than him going over there, something that had been in the works for a while now.

Yeah I read that to. Though I feel its more “I’ll try my shot with Italy and if I fail there is always USA”.

  9. Allie, let me bring you back down to reality. Why would Ives be doing an article on a 16 year old kid joining someone’s academy? There have been lots of kids that have gone over to Europe over the last few years….have you been as adamant about them getting an article as you are for Lletget? Probably not. I suspect you are probably tied to him in some way (parent, perhaps?). Whatever the reason….good for him for getting a shot at West Ham, but don’t act like its a travesty that Ives hasn’t posted an article about it.

LOL no. I am now way tied to the kid. I just thought it was intersting.

  11. Happy for Danny. His poor performance against El Salvador hasn’t made me lose faith in him. I don’t really even blame him for doing badly; he didn’t really have much time to get a connection with the boys out there.

  12. Ives when are you going to write an article about Sebastian Lletget signing with West Ham? He got an Italian passport. Its been big news over on BigSoccer for days. He is joining them in July and has been in London since December.

  13. Can’t believe Pisa hold on the entire game, knowing a tie will keep them in Serie B and let up a goal in the 92nd to send them down… BUT, Brescia is now in the playoffs for the third and final promotion spot (Bari and Parma are automatically promoted). Maybe Danny can get some Serie A action next year… Hope so…
