In case you missed it last year, the Showdown in Chinatown was one of the most memorable soccer events in New York City in recent memory. Featuring NBA stars and international soccer stars such as Steve Nash and Thierry Henry (both in yellow above), the charity game had fans climbing trees and fences to catch a glimpse of their favorite basketball and soccer stars.

The event is back and is promising to be just as fun as the first. The second annual Showdown in Chinatown is set for Wednesday (Tomorrow) at 6pm at Sarah D. Roosevelt Park in lower Manhattan and will feature the following soccer and basketball stars:

Steve Nash, Claudio Reyna, Thierry Henry, Tony Parker, Javier Zanetti, Raja Bell, Adrian Mutu, Chris Bosh, Ivan Cordoba, Grant Hill, and Giovanni van Brockhurst

Yao Ming was also listed as a participant, and if he does show up, it will make finding a seat even that much tougher.

The event is being held to help raise money for the Steve Nash Foundation and Claudio Reyna Foundation. You can go here for more information on the event and its charitable efforts.

The actual soccer game is free and open to the public. There's just the matter of getting there early enough to score a good seat. If you didn't catch last year's event, here is some video from the 2008 Showdown in Chinatown:

Will you be there on Wednesday?

  2. I wish RBNY was in town this week so JPA, Wolly, Kanji, or Celades could be there. This will be more entertaining than the Toronto Game.

  3. Steve Nash is one of my favorite people (not just athletes) alive. He is from my Santa Clara University! He paid back his full-ride scholarship in full. He does charity work all the time. And he loves soccer! dude is super humble, totally kind, and looks like Skeletor from He-Man (2 out of 3 aint bad)

i’m out in Cali, but sure wish we had something like that here.

Colombianos in the house! last year Juan Pablo, this year Ivan Cordoba!

btw i’m glad they dont have Baron Davis back, that dude sucks! wouldn’t want him clipping Henry’s feet again

  4. Last year’s event was the catalyst for forcing sicknote Reyna off the team.

Maybe we could convince Osorio to take part in this year’s version.

  5. I’m there again, gonna miss Jozy this year but he’s got his hands full. Wonder if JPA will show. And yep, Baron Davis was easily the most entertaining NBA player, too bad he won’t be there, but hopefully Tony Parker or Chris Bosh provide some laughs. Last, Yao showing would be insane, I’d make him goalie.

  6. the field is awesome. i play there all the time. the best part are the spectators. for any random 5v5 urban soccer match, there will be lots of spectators inside and outside of the cage who freely share their opinion. people of all shapes and sizes and colors. wall street types and homeless guys, you name it.

  7. Grant Hill used to wear a Cosmos t-shirt on the bench with the Magic, which was most of the time he spent in Orlando. But it was cool to see.

  9. Baron Davis?

I remember my friend and I left the monday after the argentina game, got back and then heard about this, and had actually passed that field walking around the city. Atlanta needs something like this.

  10. hopefully the combination of the US game at 230 and the weather being iffy will make it a lot easier to get close to, or at least see the field. I love the improv feel of having it at the park, but if they’re going to continually get that many people, they should think about at least putting in bleachers, or risers
