Are you making the trip to Mexico City?

USAMexico

With the USA-Mexico World Cup qualifier just two days away, it is time for U.S. national team fans from all over the country to start converging on Mexico for the big game. American fans will be seriously outnumbered at Estadio Azteca on Wednesday, but that doesn't mean USA fans won't represent.

I will be heading down on Tuesday (with the SBI Mafia banner in tow) and was wondering just how many members of the SBI Mafia will be making the trip to Mexico City. Will you be making the trip South? Is this your first time? Are you a veteran of the trip? Going with a group? Are you already down there?

If you are making the trip to Mexico let us know that you're going and tell us what you're looking most forward to and what you plan on doing when you get down to Mexico.

  2. Im flying down to Mexico City tomorrow morning! Can’t wait. Where are the US fans going to be tomorrow night??? I read here that some fans will be at Yuppie’s sportsbar in La Zona Rosa. I just want to make sure, dont want to show up somewhere wearing some US gear and then be the only one.

  3. for those of you that are going to the game, heed the words of Hood_Rich. the DF is not the safest of worlds right now….or ever for that matter. the folks down there are ALWAYS looking to scam (read: steal/rob/heist) someone. DEFINITELY keep your guard up at all times and travel in numbers. for those taking a female companion, i don’t know why you would, but this applies twice as much to you folks. lastly, if the usmnt is to get a historical first victory down in azteca on wednesday, WATCH YOUR BACK FOR SURE, as the fans will be looking for revenge on anyone that has anything to do with the usmnt. i say all of this being an american of mexican descent (both parents were born in mexico), speaking the language fluently, and having been to mexico and mexico city on numerous occasions.

  5. Went to Azteca during 02 qualifying. Two thoughts.

RECOMMENDATION/WARNING: The food is crap. Eat only BEER and make sure they open it in front of you close enough that you can hear the C02 escaping.

Lay low unless you want your ass kicked.

  6. If I want to go to a third-world, disease-ridden, poverty-stricken rat hole controlled by Mexican drug lords, I’ll go to Los Angeles.

  7. For those 1st timers to the DF, this place is no joke. The coastal cities are a different matter but in the DF you have to have your guard up all the time! Every time I visit DF for work, it has been an adventure. Once the customs police took me to an office and tried to force me to pay tax on my laptop. Ignore the BS and don’t pay anything! Even our business distributor got carjacked and kidnapped while I was there. When you walk in the streets at night in Zona Rosa or Polanco, don’t stop anywhere to talk to anybody. Good luck and hope to see our boys come back with a W!

  8. All of you heading down to Azteca please be careful — chant hard for our boys but watch your back (and your beer). I’ll be at a DC pub, too. Not sure yet which pub but I plan to go back to the office either a happy drunk or a sad one.

  9. Heading down tomorrow morning. This will be my first trip down to the Azteca. I was also at the Gold Cup final but I wasn’t sitting in Sam’s Army then. I really don’t think there will be much of a difference from the atmosphere in Giants’ Stadium.

Taking the bus in with the Screaming Eagles crowd gameday. Thursday, I’ll be taking a bus tour out to Teotihuacan with my wife and another couple before flying to Puerta Vallarta for the weekend.

Send me an email if you’ll be around Tuesday night and tell me where you’ll be hanging out, Ives. Would love to meet you and pick your brain about the match. Have been reading your articles and blog as well as just about everyone else’s for this one.

After our run in the Confederations Cup, this could be our year — Andrea Canales had a good article on cnnsi.com detailing the reasons why we might pull off the upset — but El Tri might have gotten all the confidence they need to prevail with the 5-nil Gold Cup drubbing.

Just looking forward to being there the first time we win in Mexico!!!

I don’t hate Mexico Futbol because of anything political, I hate them because of the history, their hate for our team, their attitudes on the field, and how their players act like little girls. You could obviously say geography plays a part, but I’m not sure what you are talking about with politics, speaking for myself, I’ve never thought of it.

I will be going to a DC area bar, but I can’t decide… Lucky Bar, Momo’s, or Babylon??? I usually go to Momo’s, but I want to make sure I’m going somewhere that will be packed with fellow supporters. Any other DC reps heading out to bars?

  13. Saprissa in 2005 was not bad. All the fans were very friendly. It just rained the entire match and we got killed 3-0! Anyone in Section O of the lower level behind the goal?!?!?!?!??!?!

  14. If it were a friendlier rivalry and I didn’t think the Mexican fans would physically assault me for wearing being white and wearing red and blue, I might go.
You might not want to admit it, but this football rivalry IS politicized. There is a lot of ill will between our two countries for various reasons both historical and current. Having said that, I am very proud that fans from other countries could come to a match in our country and not fear for their safety. It says a lot about Mexican fans that they can’t behave like adults and refrain from chanting the name of a mass murderer at our players or throwing beer bottles. I’m sure there are perfectly respectable Mexican fans, but I’ve never met one. I’ll be watching the game with 3 friends; one Puerto Rican, one Colombian and one Ecuadorian and they all cannot stand the Mexican team.

  17. I was at Azteca in 2005, in a nosebleed section, far away from the other gringos. The people were amiable. Of course I didn’t act like a jerk either. And also, we lost that one.

  18. Watch out for the shoe shine scam! I got scammed there while on business in the DF.
Just make sure you don’t wear leather dress shoes walking around tourist/business areas. Wear sneakers and be on guard. If someone walks up to you, chats you up and seems way too friendly, then there’s something definitely going on.

  19. I wasn’t able to locate enough protective gear to justify putting my life and limbs in harm’s way, so I’ll be safely avoiding the D-cell batteries, bags of urine, and hand-slung feces by taking in the game from my stuffed leather couch.

I can’t even get out of work to watch the game live and will have to try to bury my head in the sand before I can watch it on the ol’ DVR. (Already shut down the SBI Twitter).

    Go Nats! Make some history!!!!

  23. I have done both Azteca and Saprissa Stadium once, and I swore to myself I would not go through that again…It’s a Lose/Lose for the American fan…If we lose, you will be pissed that you went all that way for a loss while facing the possibility of violence, and if we win, most of the fans will be pissed and looking to take their frustrations out on the nearest “gringo”…Good luck to all that go…It truly was a once in a lifetime experience for me…

If I were to go could I bring my machette with me? Kinda like Col. Kurtz among the savages…

  26. I wish, I dream of repping the national team at Azteca one day.

I am trying to decide whether to ignore the internet all day and watch it after work, or watching a feed at work and just realizing I’m not going to see all 90 minutes.
