Are you making the trip to Mexico City?

USAMexico

With the USA-Mexico World Cup qualifier just two days away, it is time for U.S. national team fans from all over the country to start converging on Mexico for the big game. American fans will be seriously outnumbered at Estadio Azteca on Wednesday, but that doesn't mean USA fans won't represent.

I will be heading down on Tuesday (with the SBI Mafia banner in tow) and was wondering just how many members of the SBI Mafia will be making the trip to Mexico City. Will you be making the trip South? Is this your first time? Are you a veteran of the trip? Going with a group? Are you already down there?

If you are making the trip to Mexico let us know that you're going and tell us what you're looking most forward to and what you plan on doing when you get down to Mexico.

  1. Anyone know if it’s on TV in the UK? Can’t seem to find it!

Tony, I’m in the UK, and haven’t been able to find any way to watch it (other than one of those unreliable streams). Will post on here if I figure something out; feel free to do the same! Thanks.

  2. I have to work, then play in a company softball game. So I’ve got the DVR ready to go. Thank you Directv for making Mun2 available for free.

As for you guys and girls on the ground in Azteca, remember the Alamo!!! Except for the part where the Yanks all get slaughtered. How about some fun back and forth with the Mexican fans.

I want to see the team bring that same attitude from the Confed cup into this game. If they do, I’ll be fine with the result.

  4. Jozy may get some competition playing time….from BBC

“1244 BST: Hull City boss Phil Brown has revealed striker Henri Camara, available on a free transfer after leaving Wigan Athletic, could be close to a move. (Hull Daily Mail)

Brown said: “If we can sit down and thrash out a deal, then there’s a possibility he could be a Hull City player. I’m sure we’ll do that in the next 48 hours.”

  5. just saying mexico city isn’t any more dangerous than New York City or any other big city, with 30 million people you will obviously have large statistics for anything, i’m sure you could find a couple hundred or even thousand people who think the earth is flat

  6. Yeah never been to mexico city so cant really talk, but if you are complaining about these statements being made one would call it a ignorant generalization.

  7. Never First, maybe it was in one of the dozen or so comments I didn’t read, but I haven’t seen any racism. Racism is a belief that one racial group is genetically superior to another race. I don’t think anyone has made such claims in this thread, or even made mention of race.

Obviously, the crime in Mexico City is committed overwhelmingly by Mexicans, just as the crime in New York City and Nebraska is overwhelmingly committed by Americans. Both are nationalities, not ethnic groups.

Mexico City is a third world city. Like any other third world city, it’s crime rate will put American cities to shame. If you want to avoid the “bad part of town,” avoid the entire metropolis. Be careful.

  9. Two of us are headed down from noted soccer hotbed Mississippi, for our third qualifier this round. First trip to Mexico City for one of us–looking forward to visiting one of the major cities of the world. First trip to Azteca for both of us–looking forward to seeing a game at the premier stadium in the western hemisphere. Swine flu? Two houses on my street are infected. Mexico City can’t be worse. I’m hoping for another “dos a cero,” but if I see a “Cinco A Cero” shirt, I’m bringing it home.

The funniest part about this joke is that this joke would have been the funniest in the world had he not JUST found a club and playing time, classic.

  12. Yes walking around the city is safe during the day. I went around the city to places like Condesa, Polanco, Santa Fe Mall for lunch, walked through Chapultepec Park during weekend; no problem. It’s in the evening when you walk from your hotel to Zona Rosa (Ave Insurgentes, to be exact) the dodgy characters are out in force. Avoid the Neza (where Toros Neza were from) area too and have a rip-off “experience” with the green and white taxis. 🙂

  13. definitely not the heart of swine flu here, no one talks about it any more and really few had it, more have had it in the US, that is just ignorance if that is your reason for not coming, bash the seleccion all you want, but mexico is a great and a relatively safe place

  18. Hi, I just want to offer some recent perspective on travel to DF…don’t listen to all the generalizing fear mongers. Mexico city like any other major city in the world has it dangers, however if one keeps to the same common sense they would use in any other city, most likely only a random act of violence will deter you from enjoying an amazing time. I just spent a few weeks in July based out of La Condesa(fancy, but affordable part of city) and I found the people to be extremely friendly and welcoming. I would recommend not getting wasted out at bars(this leaves you vulnerable), use “official taxis” only, stick to your less “flashy” cltohes/jewelery, and then just enjoy an f***** amazing futbol experience:) I’m an American with Mexican girlfriend(another reason to visit, gorgeous women) and I live in Mexico part of the year and I’d just like to encourage this forum to try and keep the “racist” generalizations away from our passionate support of USA soccer. It would be great if Ives had someone to monitor these comments, passion is one thing, but allowing ignorant/racist and ethnocentric views to taint the beautiful game is a shame. I hope that others that follow Ives site, will try and speak out against those who ruin an otherwise excellent venue for fútbol fanatics. Getting back to the game, I have a huge bet with my Mexican girlfriend, so the boys better step up to the opportunity to prove the confed cup wasn’t a fluke! I hope Bradley has the cojones to play “gringo torres” in the midfield and starts the Altidore/Davies duo up front. Finally, if anyone knows what channel to watch here in Portland, Oregon, that would be great! 3-1 USA:)

  21. Sorry I can’t make it. If there’s someone Mexicans hate is an American of Mexican descent cheering against their team. I’m just glad my 6 year old daughter has started school and won’t be home when I’m screaming at the top of my lungs. Living on the border I’ll be able to watch the game in HD from the Mexican over the air channels.

  24. Agree with El Torito. I’m a gringo, currently residing in Mexico City. I hate the Mexican National Team, but love Mexico City. It’s a great place to party and a better place to be a soccer fan. Mexicans from my experience hate the USMNT, but not Americans, and love to talk friendly trash. However it never has moved beyond civility, although I’d imagine when alcohol is involved, it might be different.

  25. How Funny-

Where are all the Internet American Supermen? Why don’t you go tell Mexicans what you really think about them, close up and in their faces? This is your BIG CHANCE…he, he, he. It’s easy hiding behind a computer!

Mexico City is no worse than New York City in the 70’s, and maybe just the same as Detroit…If you are talking about Ciudad Juarez, then that’s another matter! I’m so sorry that instead of posting crap, you didn’t spend more time making friends with the few Mexicans who post here, you could have spent the time of your lives down there, because even though it is dangerous right now, it’s also one of the most interesting, magical, and most entertaining places in the world

Areas to visit for drinks and some of the best food, are La Condesa, Coyoacan, Polanco, Las Lomas and Av. Insurgentes…just make sure you go back to your Hotel right after if you are not familiar and/or have friends there!

Just voted by Forbes Magazine the fourth best city in the world, FOR EATING WELL!!! Only behind Paris, Rome, and Tokyo!

Now if what you guys expect is Orlando, or Lubbock Texas, you’ll be shocked and disappointed!

  27. I lived in DF for a year and a half and went to a qualifier there. It’s not as bad as people are making it out to be. Sure there are some assholes and bad cops, but you’ll find them everywhere in the world.

Like when you travel to any city you don’t know, don’t carry around anything you can’t afford to lose, go with the flow, don’t be a dick, and have lots of fun.

Like any other major city, stay away from the bad parts.

    Nice generalizations by the way.
