While the American soccer community waits for word on Clint Dempsey's health, here are some news items to go over:

Schelotto officially re-signed by Columbus. The Crew made it officially today, announcing the signing of Guillermo Barros Schelotto. The real news is that he won't be counting as a Designated Player in 2010.

“It was a long process, but we’re very happy to be able to re-sign Guillermo for this season,” said Crew head coach Robert Warzycha. “He’s obviously been a very good player for this team and I’m glad we got him signed in time for the start of preseason camp."

Wizards set for stadium go-ahead. Wyandotte County has called a special Board of Commissioners meeting for tonight at 5pm CT to discuss the Kansas City Wizards' stadium development agreement The meeting is expected to include the final approval of funding for the stadium project, which would clear the way for construction to begin.

Ghana downs Burkina Faso to reach ANC quarters. Andre Ayew's 30th minute strike helped Ghana defeat Burkina Faso, 1-0, and secure its place in the African Cup of Nations quarterfinals.

  1. Bocanegra started and played the full 90 today for Rennes against St. Etienne. Perhaps they were just trying to showcase him to St. Etienne?

  2. City 2 United 1. Tevez with both goals, one a PK. Mancini made three subs that all turned out badly, but Given saved his lunch as United attacked relentlessly for 20 minutes or more. SAF will complain about the officiating saying the PK wasn’t deserved because the shirt pull was outside the box. He wants you to forget the two fouls that followed that were in the box.

  3. Good stuff. From what I could read up on the internet, the PCL is a rair injury to the knee, but altogether less damning than the ACL.

Let’s hope that’s true, and that Clint’s shut down for a month or two and hits stride after his return right around the end of May…

  4. You can’t fault KC for taking what they can get. I think the ultimate goal is to make the games a ‘destination’ and with the right marketing they will be…and the Royals and Chiefs can help by continuing to stink it up.

I can only imagine how different the Wizards path would have been if there was a team in St. Louis at the same time. The natural rivalry would have been great for both.

  5. That works for me. Not happy about it, but if he can be in SA and at LEAST come on as a 45 or 60 minute sub that’s much better than not having him at all. Get better soon Clint!!

  6. Fulham website:

During the Blackburn Rovers fixture on Sunday 17 January, Clint Dempsey sustained moderate damage to a ligament in his right knee. Following the results of a scan, early indications are positive in that no operation is required. At this stage it is thought that the injury will not prevent him from featuring for Fulham, prior to the end of the season.

Whilst obviously disappointed, Clint is focused on his rehabilitation and will work hard, in line with medical advice, to return at the soonest opportunity.

  7. CNN/SI with an early report on the toll the earthquake has taken on the Haitian sporting and soccer community:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/soccer/01/19/haiti.deaths.ap/index.html

The building which housed Haiti’s soccer federation and, apparently, the Olympic federation, collapsed. Several Olympic athletes killed, along with at least 30 employees/members of the soccer federation. Untold numbers still lay buried. Unknown how many soccer players may have been in the building.

Anyone who saw the Gold Cup will recall that the Haitian team looked pretty good, and came within a minute or two of beating the USA…before Holden’s brilliant equalizer.

  9. i agree to a certain extent (i would love a rebrand) but as far as location there really isnt much to offer here. Few people live downtown and the ones that do arent soccer fans (regardless the money isnt there and the striped shirt popped collar crowd at P&L isnt a fan base either), the OP locations are all strip malls as well. This isnt a tourist city, having things like NFM and the waterpark help make it a destination. Honestly, where else would be a better location? Lets not kid ourselves either, if this was just a Stadium issue it would not be happening, Cerner is/was the key, and medical software doesnt “exude quality atmosphere” does it?

  10. Great. Maybe they’ll get a Chuck E. Cheese soon too. Furniture Marts exude quality atmosphere.

I pray this team at least re-brands. What an embarrassment. This team is the red headed step-child of the league.

  11. correct, KC is actually covers more area than any “major” city in the US. Jackson County (KCMO) just spend millions and millions on Kauffman (Royals) and Arrowhead (Chiefs) and its not exactly a wealthy county to say the least. This will be on the KCK side (Wyandotte county) at an outdoor mall location that also has a massive NASCAR track, huge water park, Nebraska Furniture Mart and that kinda stuff. It is where they are currently playing as well so we will get to see the stadium undercontrustion from some of the seats at the CAB, which is pretty cool i think.

  12. Bocanegra gets the start for Rennes today against St. Etienne. No score at the half. So is he headed to les Verts and they’re just show casing him or is this nothing more than panic mode on all fronts.

    ;O)

  13. Didn’t he play a fully 90 over the weekend? Can’t iamagine he would be able to start again after coming back from such a lengthy injury.

  14. Remember, Kansas City isn’t necessarily like NY or DC, its city center isn’t the be-all-end-all and people there actually drive. more akin to Denver or SLC…

  17. You know it’s interesting before we beat england in 1950 We had one player who was injured in a car crash another who had a knee injury and the player who scored the goal was of Haitian descent. It was mentioned on FSC FF last night

  18. IMO, not a good location. Better locations were attempted but not paid for by the Overland Park and KC,MO governments. But it’s proven since they are selling out their 10k seat park at the same place.

  21. Wow it seems the the Crew have joined the Patriots as 2 of the only teams is all sports to pay a player based what they will do in the contract years and not what the player has done with you in the past.

    Organizations everywhere should take note.

  22. Like a roller coaster for US soccer right now.

We will see Holden next year, no he is going to England, no we will see him, no Portugal.

Ditto for LD, no seeing him next year, he is gone, no only a loan, no an extended loan, maybe longer.

Glad this an upswing, KC with a real stadium and a good player staying where we can see watch him.

please get a CBA signed, that will trump all.

  23. Patience, man. He’s coming off an almost six month layoff. It’s unreasonable to expect him to be at his best after that. Hopefully he gets time to get his feet back under him.

  24. Urgh, Edu on the bench for Rangers. So much for his triumphant comeback from injury. I can’t say he deserves anything more, the way he has played since he’s been back.

  25. Wait. Where’s the “and more”?

(SBI-Got called into some interviews before I could add the “and more.” Working on that now.)
