Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

By FRANCO PANIZO

On most weekends it is the veteran Americans Abroad who enjoy the bulk of the success, but some of this weekend's better performances came from the younger contingent.

Leading the way was Jozy Altidore, who handed Hull City a huge boost in its fight to stay in the Premier League by drawing a penalty kick 16 minutes into its match against Fulham. Altidore didn't take the spot kick, but it was converted and it set the tone for a surprise 2-0 win for Hull.

Another young American attacker helped his team get on the scoresheet, and that was Mikkel Diskerud. Trailing 1-0 in the first half to Aalesund, Diskerud one-timed a shot with the outside of his foot to score his first goal of the season for Stabaek. The game ended 2-2.

Freddy Adu didn't directly help Aris score, but he did start for Aris in its 1-0 win over Levadiakos. Adu, who was deployed at left mid, played the full 90 minutes, marking the first time he's done that in league play this season.

Here is how the Americans Abroad fared this weekend:

  1. yep sadly though, goals are why he’s there and it’s precisely what Hull needs. He had a very good game though.

That said i think if i had a choice i’d take a striker that can be anonymous for a lot of the game but hit a double. He did play well though. no doubt. He needs to get a real greed and hunger for scoring though.

  2. He should have made that save. It was a great dipping shot from Gomez, but honestly, the keeper should have done better.

  3. Herc over Ching? interesting that it is even being discussed. 2 years ago (or was it 3?) Gomez looked out of place in the Copa America.

Last year he Ho-hummed it, up and down. He is owning the MFL right now and my guess is if he keeps it up he is brought to camp.

His FK was a beauty, lots of pace…but it should have been saved. The real question is how is his play during the run of play? I’ll admit I’ve not watched Puebla this year…but will catch the next couple of games just to get an idea.

  4. i read a recent yanks-abroad post from Mix stating he’s yet to hear from the US u23 team regarding the olympics…making me nervious, this kid will be a stud!

  5. I’d take Herculez over Ching for sure. Hopefully BB will pick him for the squad. But, that’s like saying “10 saves a game” Hahnemann is going to take the 2nd keeper spot over Guzan who hasn’t sniffed the feild in months. It’s not going to happen. There’s a heirarchy. Unless Ching breaks both his legs, Herculez isn’t coming.

would like a – Jozy, Davies, Gomez, Johnson forward setup though.

Most of our players are getting time, which is a major boost. Cooper’s actually getting on the bench too. Things are looking up.

  6. *wipes a tear* Ochoa’s look after the goal was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen today. 🙂 It would only have been better if he took the ball off the face instead of the arm/chest area.

  7. I think winning a penalty should count as .8 goals (or whatever the conversion % is) in the stat sheet. Jozy may not score a lot, but good lord does he like to get fouled in the box.

  8. No its not to secure a loan deal. They only signed one year deals at Everton. Both contracts are up in the summer. Everton is giving them a chance to find a new club. Pretty classy move if you ask me. They are pretty old in terms of making it at Everton. Everton have a lot of good talent in the reserves and youth teams so Arnoux and Peterlin are pretty much out.

Motherwell liked them though, especially Arnoux.

  9. They are both looking to secure loan deals.// the reserve season is nearly complete in England so they are trying to get some first team football. They already had 1 trial week and got extended another.

  10. Love how Ochoa flubbed that save, then the camera zoomed in on him looking totally flabbergasted with himself, with a perfect view of Club America’s sponsor: Bimbo. Classic.

  11. Oh really? I was under the impression he was doing well… Interesting. I will be honest in saying I have never seen him play – only read match reviews.

  12. I think Jozy is only good at flopping to get fouls. I mean seriously, all of the fouls he drew, he totally embellished. When can he actually score a goal on his own??

  13. A hastily researched but hopefully accurate fun fact about Herculez: Of recent El Tri goalscorers against the U.S. who ply their trade in Mexico, Herculez just passed Miguel Sabah to lead them all in Clausura scoring! Of course he and everybody else have a ways to go yet before they catch Chicharito.

  14. Good weekend for our boys, the only one that had a hard time this weekend was MR.Brad. 🙁

Glad to see Hercules find the net again. Everytime Hercules scores during a Puebla game they should have Eddie Murphey’s voice do the Hercules shout!:)

Ochoa had another bad game.lol I’ve always said this kid is like a pair of retro Jordans, all hype everytime they release. Overated goalkeeper!.. most Mexicans fans refuse to accept the truth. He is a good goalkeeper, but not good enough for U.S fans.lol

  15. Not so much a reply to you, but just trying to keep the Gómez thread together, I see by the game reports that both Puebla goals were by ex-MLSers, Pescadito Ruiz scoring the first.

That has to make one of Mexico’s most important teams feel even better about the whole thing…

  16. According to Monterrey newspaper ‘El Porvenir’ and also the archived live coverage on a fan blog, Edgar Castillo left with an injury.

The fan blog also listed him starting at left mid, for what it’s worth.

Didn’t watch the game, just curious like you.
