A week after being released by D.C. United, Danny Szetela has found a team interested in giving him a look, and he might end up not waiting long to face his former club.
According to sources close to Szetela, the Philadelphia Union are bringing in the former U.S. youth national team star for a trial for the remainder of this week and next week, a stint that will come ahead of the Union's home opener at Lincoln Financial Field against D.C. United. Sources close to Szetela told SBI on Tuesday that the former U.S. national team midfielder will look to impress Union head coach Peter Nowak, who coached him with the U.S. Olympic team.
Szetela was let go by D.C. United, in part, because of the salary he was due in 2010 (and the arrival of a more reasonably-priced alternative in Kurt Morsink), and will look to earn a place on a Union squad that just happened to have a roster spot open up on Tuesday, when the Union waived defender David Myrie.
The Union played with Michael Orozco in a defensive midfield role, but if Szetela impresses and can earn a roster spot, he could force his way into minutes in central midfield, which would allow Nowak to move Orozco to a right back role. Myrie started at right back in Philadelphia's season-opening 2-0 loss to Seattle.
Philadelphia has a bye week this week. D.C. United will play host to New England after suffering a 4-0 loss to Kansas City in its season opener.

Are the players drug-tested? before or after they sign? maybe this is why Myrie was released.
