Algerians/Slovenians Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Algerian midfielder Abdelkader Ghezzal is beginning to find his scoring touch just in time for the World Cup, and Bari was the latest victim to fall prey to his finishing.

Almost a month after hitting a brace in a shocking comeback draw against Juventus, Ghezzal scored two beautiful equalizers in Siena's 3-2 victory over Bari. Ghezzal first started a nice passing sequence before rifling a one-timed volley to the near post. He then added his second by delivering an impressive lob from 22 yards out. The two finishes gave Ghezzal six goals on the season.

Algerian midfielder Salim Arrache also found the back of the net, but his goal must have been bittersweet as PAS Giannina is doomed for relegation in Greece after its crushing 3-1 defeat to Ergotelis. Arrache's goal had pulled Giannina level, but the team would crumble by surrendering two second half goals.

Threatened by relegation in the Bundesliga, VfL Bochum lost 2-1 to Hamburg, and the club's goal came courtesy of Zlatko Dedic. The Slovenian forward unleashed a wicked left-footed volley in the first half, but his equalizer would be outdone by a late own goal.

  1. There is an Algerians and Slovenians abroad section because the Algeria and Slovenia are in the USA’s group in the World Cup.

  2. I’m almost as impressed with Dedic’s miss as his actual goal. that was a cracker off the crossbar!

    I second DC Josh’s question

  3. Does anybody know why Ziani, Meghni, Mansouri and Halliche are not playing or playing very little. Those are four important players for Algeria, who logged 6 minutes between them this weekend, with two (Ziani and Meghni) not even dressing again. Are they injured or what?

Very nice goals by Ghezzal and Dedic, who also hit the post with a long-range blast.

  4. we are doomed. God help us all…well, at least those of us addicted to soccer. C’mon, they have a dude who indeed does look like Vinny Jones.

  5. Hey Franco, what is the projected starting XI for both teams in the World Cup? Are there players who typically start for their country who aren’t seeing any playing time for their club?
