There were some stunning goalkeeping performances in MLS Week Five, but this week's SBI MLS Player of the Week honors go to a field player carrying his team like no other.

Dwayne DeRosario notched a goal and an assist to help Toronto FC post an impressive 2-0 victory against a makeshift Seattle Sounders squad on Sunday.

DeRosario was one of several players who enjoyed strong weeks. Columbus goalkeeper Wil Hesmer enjoyed a stellar performance in the Crew's 1-0 victory vs. Real Salt Lake, while Donovan Ricketts starred for the Los Angeles Galaxy in its scoreless draw vs. Kansas City. Sacha Kljestan also enjoyed a standout performance for Chivas USA in its 3-2 win vs. San Jose.

What did you think of this weekend's top performers? Who got your Player of the Week vote?

  1. how is it that anyone beating the sounders is an auto choice for player of the week? both goals were gifts from players playing their second full 90 in 72 hours, yes he made the play after they gave him the ball but give me a break.

  2. I agree. Putting away two gifts is impressive though, but one must consider that the Sounders are racing to the bottom.

  3. It was wet and rainy enough that my Sounders were like flopping fish in water.

MLS needs to do something about the diving. Be the first in soccer to solve a very easily solvable problem.

  4. DeRosario is a monster.

When Olonso turned over the ball, it was a given he would convert quickly. ditto on the assist.

Not sure I would give him player of the week, but whatever.

Without him it is a LOT bigger chance of a zero-zero tie.

  5. I think we turned a corner with this game. If we keep consistent with performances like this, not only will we make the play-offs, we can challenge for the MLS Cup.

Whether Seattle started their best 11 or not, TFC’s steely determination would have won out over Sounders best attempt at flopping about on the ground like a fish out of water.

  6. Good for DeRo. He deserves it. Probably won’t be enough to get TFC to the playoffs this year. It’s as if whatever sickness the Maple Leafs have is infecting TFC… rich, strongly supported clubs that never make the playoffs.

  7. yeah, dero’s goal was the result of some bad defending by the sounders to turn over the ball, but he did make a quick step and a solid finish once he got the ball. his break out and pass to o’brian white was a well-earned assist as well.

really though, watching the TFC game, dero was only the third best player on his team on the day. frei was spectacular at times and earned a clean sheet, while de guzman had his finest game in the MLS.

  8. Usually they use 4-4-2. But this time it looked like they used a 4-2-3-1. Kept Casey up front alone. Omar Cummings swung out right to test the RB. Gave him a lot more room to run.

Ballouchy was put in the middle of the 3 up top. And Wells got the start on the forward Left. Even though both he and Ballouchy were kind of all over the place up there.

Pablo and Jeff didn’t drop back like they normally do. They were presed a little bit more forward.

It worked really well. Like I said, best I have ever seen them play.

  9. If you are going to mention Ricketts, how about Matt Besler for KC who anchored a backline without Jimmy Conrad that shut down Edson Buddle and Landon Donovan. Not only did Conrad not play, but Pablo Escobar had to be subbed out with an injury and Aaron Holbein had to finish the game. Not too bad for a 2nd year guy.

  10. Hesmer had a great game, but the match should have ended with a draw. RSL’s disallowed goal was legit. MLS should embarrass the FIFA dinosaurs and take the lead in implementing a successful and efficient video review system.

  11. I disagree with DeRosario. Alonso and Marshall should be credited with assists to because they gifted DeRosario both balls in positions where he could inflict damage. Outside of those two turnovers, DeRosario did not factor much in the game.

  12. Mehdi Ballouchy, Colorado Rapids. He and the entire club put in a “best ever” performance against New England. I don’t think you can say anything against them in that match.

Maybe I’m just saying this because I was so shocked by the fact that…it’s Mehdi.

Steven Nicol simply got out-thought by Gary Smith, who I think has found the ‘golden formation’. We’ll see how it holds up in the coming weeks, but I was stunned by how well the Rapids played against a decent and often dangerous New England side.
