Seth Stammler isn't known for his goal-scoring exploits, but you would have thought he was a seasoned goal scorer the way he blasted home the game winner in the New York Red Bulls' 1-0 win against Chivas USA on Saturday night at Red Bull Arena.

Stammler blasted home a left-footed shot from 30 yards out in the 27th minute to give the Red Bulls (7-5) a lead they never surrendered. New York's defense held Chivas USA at bay as Bouna Coundoul made three saves to preserve the shutout.

The win, New York's second straight, moved the Red Bulls into a tie for first place with the Columbus Crew (which holds a game in hand), while Chivas USA (3-8-1) lost its fifth straight to remain in last place in the West.

Here are the highlights from last night's match:

What did you think of New York's performance? Impressed with the performances of Stammler, Tony Tchani and Tim Ream last night? Think Chivas USA is doomed to finish last in the West?

thank god they won I came up from Palm Beach to go see the stadium for the first time and watch the game, I still think the JPA goal was robbed (have to see some replays to make sure)and I do believe the midfield and forwards look tired, the team as a hole looked tired to me. But I’m glad they won.

chivas just doesnt have the talent to compete, especially with Mr. Jaime Lee out of the line up. To their credit they defended hard, but basically theyr’e nothing more than a USL team without Klejstan

I was at the arena for the firswt time since the Santos friendly, and the atmosphere was still terrific. Almost 19,000, and the supporters sections were rocking all night long. Ream saved a goal off the foot of Galindo, but he seemed to struggle at times, especially with high balls down the flank. mendes saved his bacon a few times. Overall, a very nice performance and a very enjoyable evening. By the way, when the weather is nice, the walk through the Ironbound from Penn Station is quite pleasant and easy.

not known as a goal scorer but it appears he might be related to superman , with two grown men on his back lol.

It was an owngoal so offsides wouldn’t have been an issue. It was a legit owngoal.

A couple of thoughts on the game:

    1. Stammler’s goal was tremendous. A bomb that any pro would be happy with.

    2. Ubiparapovic was looking very sharp until his injury. Hope he returns quickly.

    3. Tchani is a nice addition to the midfield.

    4. JPA works hard for the team and shows for the ball well.

offsides still counts on own goals because he interfered with the play. it wouldn’t have been an own goal if Angel wasn’t on his back trying to score. therefore, offsides.

Tim Ream does really well if he can get a defender infront of him 1v1, where he can step up to make a tackle. I think because of this, teams are being told to play the ball behind just behind him, or just aim long balls towards him. Tim made a bunch of world class tackles and blocks last night, and is still showing his raw potential. Give the kid more time!!

Fully agree that Ream has done very well. I was only pointing out the few times when he struggled, with just the kinds of balls you describe. I think it’s a great sign that with a rookie defender, there are only a few rough spots to point out in a game.

RBNY now has as many points as they did all of last year and two more wins than they had all of last year. Yet, they have many of the same players on the roster. What could be the cause of this improvement? I wonder.

I’ve heard this a number of times, but it’s not entirely true. I don’t even want to think about where this team would be without the new additions. Lindpere, Ream, Miller, Tchani, Chinn, and Garcia have all played very well.

It’s not so much the new players, it is how the players are being utilized that has helped. If JCO was still coach, Conor Chinn would be the new goalie.
