U.S. Open Cup Third Round: Your Running Commentary

  Usopencup

Two more games remain in the U.S. Open Cup Third Round, and by the end of the night the eight-team quarterfinal field will be set.

D.C. United hosts USL-2 side Richmond Kickers, with the visitors looking to boost the third division's record to a perfect 3-0 in this round of the tournament. That game can be viewed here (7:30 p.m.).

The higher profile of the two matches features the Seattle Sounders making the trip to Portland to face off against the Timbers. Seattle will look to put the clamps on high-scoring Ryan Pore and take that first step towards a second straight U.S. Open Cup trophy. The Portland Timbers website is scheduled to stream tonight's action at 10:30 p.m. here.

If you will be watching either game online, feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and any play-by-play in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action.

  1. It should come as no surprise that Los Angeles Galaxy and Real Salt Lake players are becoming fixtures atop the weekly rankings. The 2009 MLS Cup participants have the two best goal differentials in the league. The consistency of each side has been a fantasy manager’s dream, especially in a game where goal differential is as important as anything.

  2. Yeah, it’s fake … over 1000 fans going to their rivals pitch on a weeknight, 2 years in a row … There is no better rivalry.

  3. There’s nothing wrong with putting “the” in front of MLS. MLS is the name of the league, so “the” is referring to the league not “THE MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER”.

  4. Just watched the game on the local Fox Sports Network. Couldn’t have asked for a better game. Maybe a few more goals would’ve spiced it up, but you can never argue with a down-to-the-wire, edge-of-your-seat game that goes to penalty kicks and, of course, a SOUNDERS WIN!

  5. Are you guys at least getting the game right now? It still says that there is 6 mins until the game begins on the stream, but it has obv already started.

  6. I wish someone with deep pockets would get behind the Open Cup and offer major prize $$ for the winners and runner-ups. Like a cool mil for the winners and half that for 2nd place. It seems like each year this competition is just hanging by a thread and it’s nearly as old as the FA Cup (well, sorta).

I just wish the OC had a higher profile. I would like to see more teams take this competition more seriously.

I also wish the US took the Copa America more seriously, but I’m obviously on crack.

  7. DC United beat Richmond 2-0. Goals by Moreno and Quaranta. Game was at GMU on a wonderful evening with a nice sunset, big drop in temperatures, decent crowd for a midweek game during the WC after an extended MLS disappearance. Nice tuneup for DCU who got better and more cohesive as the match went on.

  8. I’m not sure what you want me to suck … Oh, you want us to suck on the cup we won last year? Is that right?

I would tell you to suck yours, but you don’t have one.
