Red Bulls v. DC United: Match Night Commentary

NYRB Dcunited

BY MIKE NASTRI

The New York Red Bulls (8-5-1) take on DC United (3-9-2) in the second leg of the Atlantic Cup from Red Bull Arena at 7:30pm (MSG). NYRB took the first leg 2-0 on May 1st, behind goals from Salou Ibrahim and Juan Pablo Angel.

The Red Bulls are in strong form earning 10 points in their last four games. They currently sit second in the Eastern Conference, two points behind the Columbus Crew. The Red Bulls look poised to capture the Atlantic Cup for the first time in seven years.

After a terrible start, DC United has gone 2-1-2 in league play since the end of May and advanced two more rounds in the US Open Cup. DC will look to build on their recent results and try to capture their 8th consecutive Atlantic Cup.

I'll be providing the live commentary from Red Bull Arena. Feel free to follow along and add your own thoughts and comments. Enjoy the match (commentary after the jump).

——————————————————

Final– 0-0 Final…Not a lot to write home about in this one. Neither team had great scoring chances and it was an overall sloppy game. The Red Bulls will not be happy with only a point at home against the last place team in the Eastern Conference. DC United will probably be happy to earn a point on the road and continue their slow climb out of the basement of the east.

That's all for me for now…be sure to check SBI for more post game reaction and a recap of the tie

—————-

93rd Minute– Kandji chests it down inside the box and nails the ball over the goal…Kandji's first meaningful touch since his injury

—————-

91st Minute– 4 minutes of stoppage time. Can one of these teams find a winner?

—————-

91st Minute– Entire ESC section jumping up and down…can't say the fans weren't passion for this Derby tonight.

—————-

90th Minute– Simms nails a shot for DC way over NYRB goal…first sorta chance for DC since early in the second half

—————-

89th Minute– Lindpere can't do anything on the free kick

—————-

88th Minute– Ubi foulded 25 yards out from goal. This could be the chance the Red Bulls needed for a game winner…

Khumalo on for Najar for DC

—————-

85th Minute– The Red Bulls will have to be disappointed with only a tie at home against a weaker DC United team…This was an opportunity to pick up 3 points…about 8 minutes left you figure with stoppage time…can they get the late winner?

—————-

82nd Minute– Coundoul up and is hunched over but looks like he is going to continue…Disaster averted for NYRB

—————-

79th Minute– Coundoul makes great diving save on Adam Cristman…Cristman was offsides though and Coundoul now down hurt on the field. They don't have a sub so this could get very very interesting in these last 10+ minutes.

—————-

78th Minute– Dangerous cross by Borman but too tall for Angel

—————-

77th Minute– Kandji on for Richards and crowd goes pretty nuts. Could this be the sub NYRB needs to spark a goal

—————-

76th Minute– Tchani and Ubi nice one-two but Tchani has to shoot that being right at the top of the box

—————-

72nd Minute– Cristman on for Quaranta…Quaranta looked a bit gas in the last ten minutes but was best player for DC in first half

—————-

70th Minute– Attendance tonight is 16,249…pretty good number considering many people are still WC focused.

—————-

67th Minute– Dangerous cross by Borman headed away by James as Angel was lurking behind

—————-

65th Minute– DC United has controlled play for past six or seven minutes…Red Bulls not stringing many passes together

—————-

63rd Minute– Pontius shot blocked by Mendes who has played well so far tonight…DC corner

—————-

60th Minute– For all you Knicks fans out there…Nash told the media that Amare is a great fit in NYC and that he and D'Antoni will work well together despite reports of past conflicts between the two of them.

—————-

56th Minute– Tchani in for Stammler and Miller in Salou…Richards goes up top Miller moves to left mid and Ubi comes over to right mid

—————-

58th Minute– Changes should allow NYRB to be quicker up front. Richards could use his speed to onto the end of one of these low Lindpere crosses.

—————-

54th Minute– Lindpere another dangerous cross across goal but Salou not able to get to it.

—————-

51st Minute– Salou yellow for foul in midfield. He has been a bit slow to the ball all night so you saw that coming.

—————-

47th Minute– Nash on Henry: "When you have been a professional soccer player on the highest level with all of those expectations since you were 17, sometimes you welcome a change. I think he's accomplished so much…He loves America, he loves New York City and I think he's ready for a new challenge. I am thrilled we will be able to see him on a daily basis."

"I think we're lucky because Thierry is still a world class player. We have had players come over and show how great they are but maybe not every night. I think he's still capable of playing at the highest level in the game."

—————-

46th Minute– We are just about ready for the second half. Steve Nash was around at halftime. I will post some quotes from him in the live commentary as the second half goes along.

Jaime Moreno has come on for Allsop at half for DC United.

—————-

Halftime– This has kind of been a snoozer. Red Bulls had one or two chances while DC United have not looked dangerous at all besides a couple of Quaranta crosses. Both teams will need to find energy in the second half. Whoever comes out stronger could decided the victor in this one.

—————-

45th Minute– 1 minute of stoppage time

—————-

43rd Minute– And just as I say that Ream heads away a dangerous cross from Quaranta on right trying to find Allsop

—————-

42nd Minute– Game has come to a halt these past ten minutes as neither team has been very creative. Both look content to get into half tied.

—————-

40th Minute– Petrescu letting them play as Albright clearly tugged on Quaranta but no foul

—————-

38th Minute– Jeremy Hall and John Wolyniec not in available subs tonight for NYRB…no reported injuries to either player.

—————-

37th Minute– Pretty good crowd here at RB Arena…Lower bowl almost completely filled and decent size crowd in upper bowl. ESC is loud and energetic for the home team.

—————-

34th Minute– Quaranta with rip from 30 yards out but right at Coundoul. Red Bulls have done a nice job keeping his back to goal and cutting down on those type of opportunities.

—————-

30th Minute– Another note on this 3rd DP…Nielsen was put on injured reserve with knee injury and Mac Kandji took his place on the roster. Therefore NYRB has one roster spot left…that is for Henry. In order to sign a 3rd DP someone on the roster would have to be cut.

—————-

27th Minute– James down in DC Unite box after collison with Salou. Head man Curt Onalfo argues that Salou should've gotten a card. Salou did come in a bit late but it wasn't intentional just going for the ball.

—————-

25th Minute– Lindpere with great run on Salou ball and plays it across goal to Angel. Angel can't get a clean touch and pushes it wide. He argues for a corner but ref Silviu Petrescu says no

—————-

24th Minute– That was a rip from Angel who is currently second in the MLS with 9 goals…one behind Edson Buddle

—————-

23rd Minute– Angel takes free kick rip from 40 yards out forcing diving save from Perkins

—————-

20th Minute– Neither team has looked dangerous yet…Ream and Mendes have looked solid in the middle of back so far as DC hasn't had any solid chances.

—————-

16th Minute– Stammler with big rip just over cross bar from 25 yards out…he has been taking shots from deep in the past few games and has looked deadly

—————-

13th Minute– Salou with rip from top of the box…just off target.

—————-

7th Minute– Sorry for the delay folks…check the home page on Soccer By Ives for more info about 3rd DP…live commentary will appear shortly.

—————-

PRE-GAME– The Sporting Director for the New York Red Bulls, Erik Soler, just addressed the media and had a lot of interesting tidbits to share. I will be typing up a separate post but some key info now…

Henry's first game is targeted to be against Tottenham. He will not play in MLS game on July 17th.

Second DP could also be available for Tottenham match but that is not certain. The second DP's identity is not known. Both player's contracts have not been fully signed as of 7pm today.

—————

PRE-GAME– Mac Kandji is available on the bench for the Red Bulls and could see his first action since he broke his foot in training on April 20th.

  1. Stammler looked confused by that round thing everybody kept kicking.

Ken: Don’t know why you don’t like Ubi. Decent skill, always tries.

    Salou: Too big and slow.

  2. I just got home and agree with alot of the fans. Clearly the problem here tonight was the MIDFIELD nothing else. Yes Salou sucks and missed ten chances. I want Henry to play with JPA who really did not get any service. You could see Hans was really pissed with Richards who stunk, UBI is not a starter and could not even trap the ball. UBI takes one dribble and passes it to the other team. Once stammler came out there was no defensive midfield play and I like Linpere but he cannot to it all. Tchani or whatever his name is is a medicore player at best. We needed this game to keep pace or move ahead of Columbus and our midfield had no energy.

JPA was given no crosses by richards or anyone else. He comes back on every corner or free kick to assist and no one else seems like they can coordinate.

We need a good attacking midfielder who can control

the ball and pass into the box to Angel and Henry or Kandji.

Ream and Albright I thought played well.

I really hope JPA stays with us because without Angel and any of his goals this year we would be at the bottom of the league.

(Houston, Kansas City, Colorado, Dallas, etc.

We need basic crossing into the box and also midfielder to wait till the forwards get into position without blasting the ball over the goal.

  3. The crowd seemed bigger than 16,249, I was in section 202 and the place was rockin’

Philly had twice as many supporters some up as DC. Perhaps that’s because it’s a new team with almost no home games early on, and it’s closer.

  4. The one comment sums up the game, that game sucked. Redbull was spineless for a home team. Backe better bring in a good CM Midfielder. Tchani is better than both Lindpere and Stammler he just needs a good mentor to develop and maximize his potential. Stammler was ball watching the whole game , Lindpere was just wild , now sure what he wanted to do with the ball. Moreno for and old and and as foward is a better playmaker than Lindpere he changed the whole game for DC.
