The New England Revolution clinched the top spot in Superliga group A with their 1-0 victory over Monarcas Morelia.

Marko Perovic scored in the 62nd minute giving the Revolution their seventh straight win over Mexican clubs during Superliga competition. The match was an even one early, but Morelia was unable to put one away.

The Revolution capitalized in the 62nd when Morelia defender Adrian Garcia was unable to clear a header allowing Perovic to fire in his third goal in four matches.

Prior to the match, the club honored retiring midfielder Steve Ralston, who was unable to play a role in the game due to paper league issues. The Revolution will host their next Superliga match in early August against either Chivas USA, Mexican club Puebla or the Houston Dynamo who are in the running for the second place position in Group B.

CONDE ALLOWS FIRE TO BEAT UNAM

A Wilman Conde goal was the difference as the Chicago Fire defeated Pumas UNAM and earned their first victory in the month of July.

In the 35th minute, a corner from Marco Pappa connected with an unmarked Conde who fired in the header to give Chicago the lead. Pumas appeared lathargic throughout the match, but after going down a goal, the Mexican giants pressured till the bitter end earning a number of chances. No chance was better than in the 90th minute, a Martin Bravo bicycle kick nearly deflected off a Fire defender and into the net.

The Fire's victory eliminated Pumas as Chicago ends Superliga with a 1-2-0 record in three group games and will resume MLS play on August 1st against the Los Angeles Galaxy. The Mexican club will now focus on the start of the Mexican Primera on Sunday against Toluca.

  1. I did see that…the interviewers were uninformed, idiotic, and borderline racist (“the others like you” comment comes to mind). What a disgrace.

Anyone seen this interview with Henry? My god I am embarassed for the interviewers. The lack of basic knowledge on their behalf is absolutely astounding. You’d think they’d at least have looked up who won the last world cup before asking Henry if he won it…

  3. Adam, you’ve got two errors in your article. The Revs could also end up playing Puebla, which will indeed happen should the Dynamo win tonight. Also, the Fire finished with one win and two losses.

  4. While new stars joining the MLS like Henry might steal the headlines, it is due to the fine play and commitment of players like Steve Ralston that the MLS has survived and grown. Thank you.
