Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Coming off an embarrassing 8-1 loss, IK Start went back to its winning ways as Clarence Goodson made his way back into the lineup.

Having served a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation last week, Goodson helped IK Start post a 3-1 victory over Brann. Goodson went the distance in the win, Start's fourth in its last five matches.

Carlos Bocanegra was on the wrong side of a 3-1 result, but he did make his debut with new club St. Etienne. In the club's season opener against Paris Saint-Germain, Bocanegra started the match at left back and looked composed with the ball at his feet, constantly playing it along the ground.

Anton Peterlin not only made his first appearance with a new team, but also made his European club debut with a 90-minute performance in Plymouth Argyle's 1-0 triumph over Southampton.

Do you think Goodson's form warrants a start against Brazil? Impressed by Bocanegra's debut? Encouraged by Peterlin's showing?

  1. tracking league two is a joke. I don’t even like the League one updates. You may as well tell me what every kid in college is doing at that point.

Plus I know there are American’s in BL.2 and the second divisions in France etc. Too much English emphasis IMO.

(SBI-We’ve tracked the Bundesliga 2 and Ligue 2 guys before as well. When they’re in season we’ll follow them, but yes, at some point you can’t keep going lower. Gets tougher and tougher to find info and ultimately the point of this is to try and track future national team players.)

  2. Really all it would be is tracking Pittman and a bunch of dressed but did not play for Harris. Kid rarely makes it off the bench.

  3. Don’t forget Davies also BLASTED Sochaux’ ownership and coaches for not giving him a chance to play in the stretch run in Ligue One during lead-up to the World Cup. I’m sure they haven’t forgotten that.

  4. i know about the goal BECAUSE of the sunday post. Usually, the americans abroad post doesn’t exclude a player just because there was another SBI post on that player’s exploits. In any event, however meaningless, and even if I already know about, it makes me happy to to read a blurb in an american’s abroad post that the american scored a goal.

  5. Theres only two yanks in League Two Pittman and Seb Harris.

I don’t think its a bit much, it could even be down to one pretty soon. If Pittman continues to add to his tally of 9 goals in 8 games he should be on the move to one of the higher clubs interested in him.

  6. Agreed. However, I was just saying, for SBI to cover all those levels of the Football League may be a bit much. Perhaps.

  7. Thank You. It hasn’t even been 12 months yet. If he isn’t 100% healthy by next summer, then it’s time to worry and fret. For now, give him time. He should be back by Christmas. It’s not like he isn’t trying his hardest.

  8. Amazed Conor Doyle made the bench in the season opener. Gotta watch out for this kid. Hopefully he impresses Rongen enough to travel to Columbia next year.

Love the highlight of Jon Paul Pittman. Love the old school checkerboard kits as well.

  9. Lorenzo – I understand your possition on bringing in young players who are close to being able to contribute to the MNT; and focusing on our 2 biggest problem area’s (Forward & Defense). However, you have to understand that we need to continiously be working on developing and encouraging the prospected replacement players for some of our core team as well. Look at the midfield players age next WC that you mentioned: Clark-CDM (31), Jones-CDM (32), Beckerman-CDM (32), Feilhabor (29). Granted Bradley, Edu, & Torres should all be in their prime, but they too are best used as Central Midfielders. We have to look for additional Wing Midfielders Like Bedoya and Holden as potential backups in the event of injuries or in the event that Donovan (32) & Dempsey (31) won’t be able to contribute.

We need to begin looking to have 3 or 4 players for every position….not just 1 or 2.

Hopefully, with the Olympic team (U-23)being formed late this year, first part of next we’ll get a chance to really see where the MNT stands in developing quality replacements for some of our aging stars, and developing the depth we’ll need to make the next step as a national team.

  10. there could have been a red card, or a strategical sub, you never know. It can’t be that bad if the coach is starting him, he must see something

  11. Dax McCarthy has been getting minutes for a long time too, Michael Stephens, etc etc.

Diskerud looked okay in u-20 WC but no where near the level where he should be in the mix of Bradley, Edu, Kljestan, Torres, Clark, Feilhaber, Jones. I wouldn’t say he is more beneficial in the field than Beckerman. US MNT should groom players that are close to being MNT players, not just every young player that could possibly be an MNT player one day. That is the responsibility of him and his club.

Bob Bradley has rebuilt the MNT so that we don’t have to bring in a million players like he did last cycle. Not that I don’t love young promising players but at this point we have an abundance of players with the MNT that are younger than 25.

The real young players that get called in have to be REALLY promising/close to that level AND/OR in a position of need (defense, forward).

Look for players like Bedoya, Opara, Gale Agbossoumonde to be included in this classification.

Whichever forward emerges as something (no clear person here, Ibrahim, Bowen, and Grella have some decent pro minutes and goals) may come in eventually. Probably Movsysian when he gets his citizenship. Mwanga if he gets citizenship and chooses us…

  12. Why are people down on CD9? Seems like claiming he will never be to the level he was before is as ridiculous (and probably as long of an ongoing chatter) as the will he make the WC and his exclusion whinings.

Lets just see what happens… His club seems extremely cautious/patient with him.

  13. What reality? He’s still healing. Now if/when he comes back he’s stinking it up for an extended period of time, I could see that but he hasn’t touched the field in anger yet. At his age, and at this point it’s way to early to be calling time on his career as a good/great US player.

  14. Boca looked good with the ball at his feet, but looked very slow on the left side of defense. At this point, I think he’s a bit of a liability out in space.

  15. He was never going to return the same and those claiming he was ready for the World Cup were spewing madness.

His best attribute was his speed, without it, he’ll need to reconfigure his entire way of playing. Sad we may have been robbed our best striker in years, but like Michael Owen, without speed these kinds of players are only so useful and at specific times.

Still, he’s young enough. He needs to get a few games this season and not get any reoccurring injuries.

  16. If he keeps his work ethic up, he’ll contribute SOMEWHERE.

I mean, if he actually had only one leg, he’d still be better than anything DC United has right now.

I fear it’s going to be hard for a young guy to keep plugging away if he ever finds out that he’s only going to be 85% of what he once was.

  17. My GUESS is new to the team. He’s looked like he belongs in the couple of Anderlecht matches I’ve seen.

I would imagine that unless the guy is REALLY proven, you don’t just hand the keys to a new central midfielder, especially a 25 year old with no European experience.

  19. Why is Sasha consistently not playing 90 minutes? Fitness, ineffectiveness, some sort of strategery…? Thank you kindly to anyone with any insight.

  20. I think the reality of CD9 is starting to set in. Still hoping, but we might not see the Azteca/Confed Cup player.

….yes I know it was less than a year ago the guy was almost killed
