CONCACAF Champions League: Your Running Commentary

6a00e54ef2975b88330133f2996d6c970b

A day after the Columbus Crew became the latest MLS team to fall to Mexican opposition in Mexico (and fall victim to questionable officiating), Real Salt Lake will look to become the first team in league history to win an official match on Mexican soil when it faces Cruz Azul tonight (8pm, Fox Soccer Channel).

Real Salt Lake opened its CONCACAF Champions League group stage campaign with a victory against Arabe Unido, but today's match at Estadio Azul will provide a much tougher test. There is also the history of Mexican dominance over MLS (with Mexican clubs holding an 18-0-2 record at home against MLS team).

Tonight features two MLS vs. FMF tilts, as the Seattle Sounders play host to Mexican side Monterrey at Qwest Field. The Sounders need a win at home today to avoid an 0-2 start in group play.

The Puerto Rico Islanders are also in action tonight, playing host to CD FAS in Puerto Rico.

If you will be watching tonight's matches, please feel free to share your own thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action.

  1. What does a non-MLS team need to do to get a yellow card?

The Monterrey player stops and body checks a player running onto the ball.

  2. Really! Wow! we tied, then won, with the official in our pocket! Congrats to us! 😉

The US-sided thing I see as a negative out of this situation is that 1) there are a lot of skill players in MLS not of US nationality; not a benefit to USMNT to deal with this and feel the sting of disappointment professionally; 2) there’s a lot of FMF national team players who no longer “earn” results like this due to playing professionally overseas. So, no positive result to USMNT for possible complacency.

  3. THANK YOU. I think we’re watching 60% of the game. They are playing replays of NOTHING during breakaways! I’m also getting crosseyed from that friggin graphic.

  4. What an embarrassment. When are MLS teams gonna grow a pair and have the guts to close out a game that is won. Two games in a row MLS teams lose on the last kick of the ball. It’s all mental and its pathetic to think that Mexico dominates us pyschologically this way.

  5. Its fun to have more critical coaching decisions (re personnel) forced by playing in multiple competitions. Its biting the MLS teams pretty hard right now – but may actually provide the impetus to deal with limited squad sizes. Curious to see how increased interest in the CL plays out in MLS.

  6. Tony, you’re a joke. seriously, if you haven’t seen the last two nights’ worth of “competition”, and are calling the MLS a joke; or, if you have, and are STILL willing and able to call MLS a joke – nothing more to say to you. Good luck.

  7. What a finish to a game. Of course, I might have been able to enjoy it if I wasn’t an RSL fan. At least RSL went to Mexico with the intention of winning.
