Another week, another strong Fredy Montero performance for Sounders FC, and another accolade for the striker, as Montero was named Player of the Week for his role in leading Seattle to a come from behind win.

Montero scored twice against Chicago on Saturday, including a late game-winning goal in stoppage time, as Seattle defeated the Fire by a 2-1 score. His two-goal haul takes him to 10 on the season in league play, within striking range for the Golden Boot race.

A hot Montero has coincided with a successful run for Seattle, increasing their unbeaten streak to seven games with Saturday's win. The Sounders have also hauled themselves into playoff contention in the process. Montero joins Steve Zakuani as the second Sounder to earn Player of the Week honors.

  1. Are you kidding me ?

What are the Sounders going to do with $2.5 million ? Any money for that matter. It will take a lot more than that for the Sounders to send him away.

  2. “No player from MLS gets callups for Colombia unless its Valderrama at 37 cus its Valderrama.” Heh, Montero has already been capped by Colombia four times. He has also scored a goal in int’l play in a friendly versus El Salvador. So yes, I think it’s a good bet he will get called up by Los Colombianos.

  3. There is no way this guy gets called up for the Colombian national team. No player from MLS gets callups for Colombia unless its Valderrama at 37 cus its Valderrama. Americans think because Colombia didn’t qualify for the world cup they r a bad team. Don’t forget how tough it is to qualify from South America. Colombia has plenty of players who play in Spain, England, & Italy who don’t even get callups what makes u think Montero will?

  4. Nkufo had some great runs and there needs to be some adjustment within the team. In Saturday’s game he had a great run off a Montero pass, I want to say somewhere around the 63 minute. Zak ran the back post like he should but the other players didn’t follow through to support the pass. Montero made a move to the near post… he was a little late and Sturgis stood just outside of the 18 instead of moving to the attack. Sturgis should have move to about the PK spot and in fact that is exactly where the ball was delivered by Nkufo. The right ball but the others not going to where they should be…. not moving to space.

  5. I’d say a bit of both…especially if you watch enough MLS to realize how frequently bad marking goes unpunished in this league.

  6. he is probably in contention with dayro moreno and renteria for the starting 11 spot at center forward for colombia. they got to call him up for the next 2 friendlies. but than again david ferreira from fc dallas with 6 goals and 8 asissts also could be in contention. but i bet that it will be montero in the end for the 2014 cycle. viva colombia!!

  7. Im glad I wasnt the only person seeing that. We Americans need a real MLS recap show on an MLS network (They just hired that guy who has helped launched over TV Networks) so we as Americans can get a full break down of all games so we can fully begin to appreciate all of the nuances of the game…. I am in no way a EuroSnob, I am a person that has slowly been pulled into soccer because of the World Cup over the years and my extreme dislike of all American sports with the exception of Basketball (which I could subconsciously still like because of its world wide impact). As a person who has only became a true fan of MLS a couple years ago (Thanks Jozy), I feel that the severe lack of coverage and analysis of MLS leaves me having to search out analysis thus making it harder for us regular Americans that didnt grow up with parents preaching the importance of intangibles in Soccer to fully understand how complicated the game is. I thankfully am a research Nazi and have learned a lot on my own but there are probably a lot of people that wont take the time to do all the research that I do, So I pray for some good Analysts to come over and cover MLS.

    P.S. Sorry for rambling

  8. Couldn’t disagree with you more, nico. Sure he’s something of a homer, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. And he’s not an over-the-top homer: he’s been critical of Nyassi’s finishing, was critical of Ljungberg’s histrionics, obviously lost patience with Montero’s flopping last season, and he’ll give you a fair read on a controversial call, as he did Saturday night when he refused to criticize the ref for the iffy handball as Qwest went zonkers. Plus, he wears snazzy suits, has a vocabulary roughly quadruple the size of a typical sports announcer, and drops killer alliteration and assonance like he starred in 8 Mile. Did I mention he flat-out knows football?

I say this as someone who was exceedingly skeptical of the need to bring in an Englishman and the wisdom of switching to one-man booth. I was fully converted after about ten minutes of Arlo’s first game.

  9. Montero absolutely has to be in contention. Fredy has become so much more than a pure goal man, as his 10 assists attest. He is possibly a better passer than scorer, and that is saying something. On this run he has morphed into the guy through whom everything runs, distributing the ball brilliantly with creative and perfectly timed and weighted passes. If he had better finishers for teammates he’d easily have another 7 or 8 assists.

  10. +1 Glad to see someone understands just what Nkufo brings. It’s not all about goals goals goals. He’ll get his soon enough.

  11. Wow. Are you retarded? Everything a club does is marketing moron. A properly marketed product means more sales. Or in this case, viewers. As for the accent, that has nothing to do with anything. Arlo is just plain good. He knows the game and he does his homework on each and every team. As opposed to some who butcher players names, don’t know who is on the active roster, and talk non-stop throughout the match about nothing. And don’t even get me started on the nationally televised matches… The CCL broadcasts are practically unbearable.

  12. I agree with you about Nkufo’s hold up play. He’s also a smart and accurate passer. But frankly, I think Jaqua should be starting over him right now. Jaqua just seems to bring more energy to the attack, and Seattle’s attack is largely about speed.

  13. Being a RBNY Fan, I probably shouldn’t be one to comment on Sounder matters but of the games that I saw is looked as if Blaise was the ultimate Target Man…. granted in MLS we expect much more of our Designated Players but alot of the things that Blaise does on the field go unnoticed…. His hold-up play is top notch and will only be noticed once Seattle has its full compliment of players. Blaise playing up top with Zakauni to his left and Montero to his right with Fernandez and Nyassi just behind them is an absolute problem but I dont know if Sigi would play such an attack minded 4-3-3 even with Alonso in the middle to absorb any counter attacks but it sure would be a thing of beauty with all of the those attacking players interchanging

    GO MLS

  14. Really? Sounds like a marketing machine for Sounders…and I am a Sounders fan. The guy just kisses every players’ butt. I suppose the British accent is appealing to some, but not enough for me.
I suppose in comparison to others he might be OK.

  15. Thus far Nkufo has been a disappointment. If he doesn’t start scoring goals or setting up obvious assists I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not in a Sounders jersey next year. I’ve heard rumors that he has family in Vancouver BC(can anyone confirm this?), so Whitecaps could be an option next year. He sure does look slow and tired out there though…

  16. I really feel Seattle will offer him a DP Salary after the season as an incentive to stay in Seattle….. Hopefully all teams look to do this. Sign young cheap players from South and Central America and as they get better and better offer them DP Salaries… The same goes for young americans as they get better MLS teams need to make them DP’s so that they stick around for longer. It is the only way to ensure this league will become a success

Freddy Montero would be great in Holland

  17. I’m thinking 3rd DP or maybe ‘kufo can take a cut cause I’m not thrilled with his production

    Fredy should be the DP!

Angel has a few more goals but remember Seattle had injuries to A LOT of their starters and he had very little service, but still 10 vs 12 is not that much of a difference and the 10 assists speak volumes!

  18. Arlo white is amazing. He was worth listening to even during that terrible patch of games the sounders had. Seattle needs to use a dp spot on him.

  19. So how long does Montero stay in Seattle. It’s obvious his game has taken a step forward from last year. Where does he go and how much is he worth to a foreign club. I’m guessing a low level Primera team in Spain for 2.5 million.

  20. If he keeps up the goals AND the assits and carries Seattle into the play offs like he is doing now, YES he will be a top contender for MVP.

  21. Montero is having a great run. But MVP? He’s not even the best Colombian striker in MLS. Angel has more goals and more wins. Let’s keep it 100% real.
