Chicago, Toronto settle for 0-0 draw

Both the Chicago Fire and Toronto FC entered Wednesday night's Eastern Conference clash in need of three points to close the playoff gap.

Neither side could capitalize on a handful of chances, however, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw that did little to help either side's playoff aspirations. Freddie Ljungberg let the best chance of the game go begging, failing to beat Toronto goalie Stefan Frei in a 1-on-1 opportunity in the second half. The Swede latched on to a through ball from Nery Castillo, but Ljungberg's shot went just wide of Frei's goal.

Meanwhile, Toronto secured just their fifth point away from BMO Field on the season, and had two first-half handball claims in Chicago's box turned down by the referee. The Reds are four points behind Seattle and San Jose for the eighth and final playoff spot.

Here are the highlights:

What did you think of Wednesday night's match? Can either side make the playoffs?

  1. the low scores are due to talentless teams and poor management. This was an extremely understimmulating match to watch. Patrick Nyarko basically plays by himself against every team, he’s the best asset the Fire has and contributes either directly or indirectly to most scoring chances the team has. Cannot even believe people actually take this garbage seriously.

  2. I cannot say this with enough emphasis, Fire need Papa in their line up BAD! This gives Freddie an option out wide, Papa has had a break out year. I know it’s no excuse but Segares is sorely missed, and didn’t Conde start on the bench? Wonder why but those 2 need to be starting, I think they can still make it since they have a game in hand, but they better come up with something and hope SJ and Colorado lose some games, I do not want to see 6 West teams, rather see Chicago or better yet Toronto make it! Chicago needs to be kicking some but next season and have the type of attendance the 3rd largest city should have

  3. That “spark or life” isn’t going to get you to the playoffs. Last I checked he was already suspended a game due to yellow card accumulation. That guy is a head case.

  4. freddie has been a spark of life, something the fire needed. But then again, we’ve struggled with goal scoring anyhow, so im sure he’ll fit right in :-/

  5. Hahahahaha I’m so glad Freddie is someone else’s problem now. Anyone in Seattle can tell you that he can’t put the ball in the net. Have fun Chicago!

  6. Typical Ljungberg. He’s great at creating and beating the first man off the dribble. But ask him to put the ball in the net and he’ll look at you with a blank stare. He’s a tremendous player. He just isn’t a goal scorer.

  7. Maybe the second pk could have been called, but the ref blew a clear penalty on TFC when Nayrko was pulled down in the box and the final offsides call vs. Castillo was a joke — clearly onsides (although I understand the side judge was used to seeing him offsides)

  8. Incorrect. Any striker can miss a shot, no matter how easy–although some are a little harder to believe than others. But it really takes a ‘special’ keeper to basically put it into his own net. Thanks for the spills and the thrills DC, you’ve been fun to watch this season.
