CONCACAF Champions League rewind: Crew falls, Sounders win and more

 CCLLogo

The Columbus Crew missed its chance to clinch a place in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday night, suffering a 2-1 loss to Guatemalan side CD Municipal.

Former Los Angeles Galaxy forward Guillermo "Pando" Ramirez scored both goals on a rain-soaked night to help Municipal move to within a point of the Crew for a berth in the Champions League quarterfinals with a match remaining.

The Seattle Sounders were already eliminated from quarterfinal consideration before Wednesday night, but managed their first win in the competition with a 2-0 victory against Honduran side Marathon in Seattle. Michael Fucito scored both goals for the Sounders.

In other Champions League action, the Puerto Rico Islanders rallied to register a last-minute 3-2 victory against Mexican side Toluca in Puerto Rico. The victory moved the Islanders into first place in Group D. Meanwhile, Santos Laguna delivered a 5-1 thrashing of Joe Public.

Here are highlights of the Crew's loss and Sounders win:

  1. Once again the Puerto Rico Islanders representing in this tournament. MLS pay attention…. I know Puerto Rico risks a lot in this competion but isnt that the way it should be?

A USSF Division 2 kicking rear ends once again in this competition. Nothing but heart….. wow this team out performing MLS again and again. Cut and Paste MLS… Cut and Paste.

Keep it up Puerto Rico…. represent the league.

  2. Yes that is exactly what I mean. I am not crazy thinking he is ready. i said that if he “Gets A squad playing time” experience etc then Bradley calls him. As well as “sometime next year” which could potentially be towards the end of another entire MLS season.

Lets just keep our eye on him and hope we have another forward with an upside to look forward to.

  3. Props to Puerto Rico Islanders for overachieving and taking down another giant. They showed a lot of heart.

They could have just gone into fetal potision after giving up the first two goals but they hung in. And got one. Then another. Just before Horst’s second header for the game winner, I was shotuing at the tizzzube “Get it there!” I just had the feeling that they were going to finish the rally for the win.

I was so jacked up that I couldn’t fall to sleep for hours.

  4. Glad I stopped watching this competition months ago. Any tournament where Pando is scoring braces is one that doesn’t need viewership.

When he was on Galaxy, we called him Pan-don’t because he could hardly get anything on target. Oddly enough, we were in the crowd when he scored us the winner in MLS Cup 2005. Still sucks though.

  5. Watching the Sounder’s “scrubs” the last few games, leads me to believe there are some serious studs coming out of college that haven’t hit the spotlight yet.

  6. not so bizarre — for central American futbol. I’m sure there will no sanctions from Concacrap’s corrupt and bloated leaders Messrs. Warner and Blazer.

  7. As much as I love Fucito, you have to be crazy if you think he is ready for a national team call up. He needs to get regular playing time with the first team before he would even be considered for the national team.

  8. what a bizarre end to the columbus match. the muicipal player goes down and then the coaching staff storms the field. the ref appropriately ended the game. so unreal.

  9. Seattle’s Fucito has been one of the most productive under the radar forwards given his points per 90. It is too bad he had a lengthy injury this year because he looks prime to get some A squad time. If he keeps this up and gets more experience/goals then it would be great to have Bradley call him in to pick up some spare minutes sometime next year. The kid is also super fast. If I remember correctly, I believe he won the speed tests in training camp this year.
