MLS Week 29: A Look Ahead

 Mls-logo

This weekend will mark the end of an era in MLS, and it could also signal the end of the playoff race.

Brian McBride will play his final match in Chicago on Saturday, while the Kansas City Wizards will look to win and keep their faint playoff hopes alive against New England.

McBride will be honored by the Fire at the team's final home game, at Toyota Park, as Fire fans give the U.S. national team legend a sendoff.

The Colorado Rapids can end the Wizards' playoff hopes with a win or draw against Los Angeles, but a loss at Home Depot Center coupled with a Wizards win would send both teams heading toward the final week of the regular season still vying for the lone remaining playoff spot.

Two teams already in the playoffs square off in the weekend's best match, as Real Salt Lake looks to end FC Dallas' 20-match unbeaten streak with a win at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Here is a rundown of this weekend's MLS action:

MLS WEEK 29

TONIGHT

11pm- ESPN2- Seattle Sounders vs. Chivas USA. The Sounders are streaking toward the playoffs, and will want to win their final regular season home game. For the Goats, it's about playing for a place on the team's expansion protected list.

SATURDAY

4pm- Telefutura- Chicago Fire vs. D.C. United. Brian McBride's farewell at Toyota Park will provide a storyline in this match-up of former Eastern Conference powers turned also-rans.

4pm- Direct Kick- Toronto FC. vs. Columbus Crew. A nightmare season for Toronto has taken some of the sizzle out of one of the league's more heated rivalries (at least among their fans). Columbus is struggling badly, but TFC just might be bad enough to help the Crew halt its current skid.

6pm- Fox Soccer Channel- Philadelphia Union, vs. New York Red Bulls. The I-95 Derby should be an intense battle between a tough Red Bulls squad and a Union side that is strong at home. Throw in what should be a lively home crowd and sizeable number of Red Bulls fans and this one should be a thriller.

8pm- Direct Kick- New England Revolution vs. Kansas City Wizards. The Revs are playing out the string, but this match means everything to the Wizards, who need to win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

9pm- Direct Kick- Real Salt Lake vs. FC Dallas. Two of the hottest teams in MLS square off in what could be a playoff preview. FC Dallas is riding a 19-match unbeaten streak, but RSL is nearly impossible to beat at Rio Tinto Stadium.

10pm- Direct Kick- San Jose Earthquakes vs. Houston Dynamo. The Earthquakes have qualified for the playoffs, and while they aren't likely to throw this game, there isn't exactly incentive to win and move up the Western Conference standings. Getting Chris Wondolowski some more goals to help his MVP candidacy will be one motivation.

10:30pm- Direct Kick- Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Colorado Rapids. The Galaxy sit a win away from the Supporters Shield, while the Rapids need a point to clinch their own playoff spot. Los Angeles will want to keep building momentum heading toward the playoffs, but the Rapids are surely starting to feel the heat so don't be surprised if the Rapids play for the tie.
