Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

St Etienne may have only tied AJ Auxerre, but it received good news before the match with the return of Carlos Bocanegra to its starting eleven.

Having not played in a match since Oct. 17 due to a neck injury, Bocanegra started and went the distance in the 1-1 draw with Auxerre. Bocanegra was deployed at his usual left back spot and helped St Etienne's defense limit Auxerre's potent offense to just one goal.

Stuart Holden also had a noteworthy weekend. Holden went the distance in Bolton Wanderers' 5-1 demolition of Newcastle United. The win put Bolton in fifth place in the Premiership standings, meaning they currently hold the Europa League berth, and are just a few points shy of a Champions League spot.

It wasn't all good news this weekend. Benny Feilhaber and AGF Aarhus lost their first game of the season in Denmark's second division, falling 1-0 to Bronshoj, and Michael Bradley and Borussia Moenchengladbach took a step back towards avoid relegation with a 3-2 loss to Mainz.

  1. benny’s team was relegated last year and they held on to him hoping that after the world cup they’d be able to get more for him. They waited too long and weren’t able to sell him before the deadline.

  2. Jozy may not be a great player, but he is certainly much closer to the great threshold than any of the other striker options. Right now all our forwards are pure potential(unless you count Dempsey).

  3. I told you all that Jozy wasn’t going to get any minutes last Friday on the “Americans Abroad: A Look Ahead,” section, and I was right. Deservedly so. Why can everyone else in the world recognize that he is not that great of a player, but the USSF can’t?

I’m glad BB brought in some new blood for the S. Africa game though.

I watched the Bolton game and Stuart Holden looks really confident. Too bad he couldn’t finish the one good chance he had, but it was a tough ball to connect with.

Dempsey continues to be heavily relied on by Fulham and his creativity shown again, although they had a very tough game against Man City.

  4. Yeah, I definitely don’t think it’s the best way to do things. I understand wanting to reward the higher seed, but there has to be a more reasonable way to do it. It’s really harsh on Pachucha, especially since they didn’t lose either game. It was 1-1 in the first leg and 3-3 in the second.

  5. EJ needs to get out of Fulham now, maybe even come back to MLS. also, i would like to see Lichaj and Guzan go out on loan or even a permanent transfer in January, they are both too talented and at a critical stage in their development to languish on the bench if you ask me

  6. I thought the away goals rule was the dumbest thing about aggregates. I stand corrected because the higher seed advancement is definitely the dumbest rule.

  7. Wow… Mexican playoff system is the worst… at least do away goals or penalties … but rewarding the higher seed for not being able to beat the lower one is just plain idiotic.

  8. Torres started and went 90 and got a yellow card, Gomez subbed in in the 2nd half and had an assist, Vidal wasn’t involved and I don’t think he was on the bench. Pachuca came back from 3-1 down to tie it 3-3 in the last few minutes; Gomez’s assist was on the last goal. It was tied 4-4 on aggregate, so Monterrey went through as the higher seed.
