College round-up: Maryland rolls, Irvine upset and Big East recap

NCAA tab

After a weekend full of upsets and odd results, college soccer regained some normalcy in mid-week while the Big East tournament got underway.

No. 3 Maryland continued its unstoppable run of form with a dominating 3-0 victory over No. 13 William & Mary. Jason Herrick netted the game winner for the Terrapins just 1:04 into the match. It was the fastest goal of the season for Maryland, who extend its winning streak to nine games. Casey Townsend and Paul Torres added insurance goals and Zac MacMath secured his 10th shutout of the season.

The only upset to speak of was No, 7 UC-Irvine falling to unranked Cal-State Northridge 2-1. Mattias Bonvenhi and Daniel Yoon scored for the visitors.

In the Big East tournment, South Florida was undone by West Virginia, losing 2-1. Uwen Etuk and Eric Schoenle scored for the Mountaineers, who will face Louisville on Saturday. Providence defeated Villanova 3-0 to advance to the weekend. A brace from Matt Marcin and a goal from Greg Davis was enough for the Friars. Marquette defeated St. John's 3-1 in the surprising upset of the first round. Anthony Colaizzi, Amilcar Herrera and Calum Mallace provided goals for the Golden Eagles.

Check out the rest of the mid-week action in college soccer after the jump:

No. 16 Princeton 3, Colgate 1: A brace from Matt Sanner and a goal from Brandon Busch extended Princeton's winning streak to 10 games.

No. 15 Virginia 4, Campbell 1: The Cavaliers got their offense back on track on senior night with two goals from Will Bates.

No. 22 Penn State 1, Lafayette 0: Daniel Burnham scored just eight minutes into the match for a Penn State side missing its two top-scorers.

No. 10 Creighton 2, Missouri State 0: The Blue Jays secured a share of the MVC regular-season title with a goal from Sergio Castillo and a Missouri State own goal.

No. 1 Akron 1, Michigan State 0: It wasn't pretty, but Akron got back to its winning ways thanks to a 38th-minute strike from Darren Mattocks.

Terps have only given up 3 goals in that 9 game span, as well. Terps are starting to peak just in time for the NCAA’s!

I was at the Michigan State – Akron game.

The officiating was appalling. If that game was indicative of normal officiating for Akron, then I completely understand why they do not lose games.

Michigan State out of the rankings? Well, losing streaks will do that. Go Spartans!

Irvine.. you have no chance to get the Big West title!! Let’s go Gauchos!! Shower them in tortillas!!

The best part of that stat is that they utilized a makeshift backline with Young and Cortes filling in for Ethan White and Woodberry and still got the shut out against two solid teams, UVA and William and Mary. This team is talented and deep. Can’t wait to watch their run to the College Cup!
