Pachuca comes up short against Mazembe

And just like that, the Club World Cup is over for Pachuca. Unable to answer a first half TP Mazembe goal, the CONCACAF representative was ousted at the first obstacle, falling by a 1-0 scoreline.

Mbeza Beli scored for the African side in the 21st minute, just after Alejandro Manso nearly opened the scoring for the Mexican club. He crept in behind Pachuca's back line, and got on the end of a through ball from Mulota Kabangu, before lashing it home from just inside the six-yard box over goalie Miguel Calero.

Pachuca's response was disjointed and lacked a cutting edge in Mazembe's box. They piled it on in the second half, but came up empty in search of an equalizer — even going up a man in the 81st minute when Stoppila Sunzu received his second yellow card of the match.

Jose Francisco Torres started for Pachuca, but was subbed off in the 73rd minute. Herculez Gomez came on as a substitute a minute later and put in a short, but energetic shift.

What did you think of the result? Disappointed to see CONCACAF's rep sent home early?

Good effort by Gomez with the service from the right flank. Hope RSL can win CCL when it resumes in February.

The coach was pretty awful for Pachuca. They just sat back in the first half for the most part just passing it around trying to establish a rhythm and it got them no where.

They should of been playing at a fast rhythm from the start and pressuring the attack instead of just letting them command the ball for big spurts.

Manso’s strike deserved to go in. It was class. So unlucky to hit the post at just the right angle to rebound out instead of in.

Estupidos lol, well I guess I can expect anything since Qatar won the World Cup Bid, disappointed once again.

Not unexpected. They had a terrible season this past one. The new coach is pathetic. They did nothing in the Mexican league in their latest edition.

Unfortunate that it wasn’t Monterrey representing CONCACAF. They’re in good form right now.

Either way, I love watching Torres. He played well, despite that he appeared to be nursing an injury.

Say what you will, Pachuca were pretty technical with the ball.

The BIGGEST joke is that the best teams like Monterrey and Cruz Azul don’t represent because of the way this tournament is set up. Meza left Pachuca and Pachuca was a big joke in the Apertura, so how can anyone expect them to perform at a higher level?

  • Tim

He had a one season contract at Puebla then after his great season left for Pachuca which is a much bigger club. So he probably got a better contract and a step up to a bigger club.

Well, I’m sorry to hear they are out, but I’m still gonna drink a toast Jose Fransisco Torres (JFT) and the Boys from Pachuca.

  • DCLee

Agreed but it is the same with all the teams. Inter is in it without Morinho and without watching them this season I can’t name a player missing but I’m sure they have lost someone as well.

Herc had an impressive cameo — providing very nice service from the wing.

Torres…that kid can ball. If only he got more looks with our national side.

Torres had a really rough start, making 3 errors in his first 3 touches, but after that really settled into a rhythm with Manso in the middle…Pachuca was far the ‘better’ team except for the finishing. two or three of Pacos passes were unlucky not to spring a goal.
Thought the left side was really really bad any quality on that side and this would have been 3/4-1 Pachuca.
Gomez was impressive, but thought he should have been up front, though I doubt he would have gotten the service needed from the wings.

good to see torres play in the tournament. i really enjoyed listening to the music coming from mazembe, great rythm!

Saprissa has been the only concacaf team to actually impress in this tournament. Its been all mexico teams going since then and its been the same crappy results
