Hope and promise surround Toronto FC after the revamping of its coaching and techinical staff, but those good feelings have been tempered by the word that homegrown player Nicholas Lindsay is expected to miss the entire 2011 season with a knee injury.

Lindsay, 18, thrived after joining the senior team toward the end of the 2010 season, registering three assists in four games while playing on the wing. He was expected to play an even bigger role in 2011.

According to the team's press release, Lindsay, a Canadian youth international, will undergo a first surgery on Wednesday followed by a second operation in the next 4-6 months. Details of the injury were not disclosed. Barring any setbacks, Lindsay should be ready for the 2012 season.

Here are a few more notes involving MLS teams leading up to Thursday's draft:

D.C. SIGNS BRASESCO

In a move that could foreshadow D.C. United using its third overall selection in the draft on a striker, the club acquired Uruguayan defender Rodridgo Brasesco.

The 24-year-old Brasesco will join the club on loan from Racing Club in Uruguay's top flight and can play either at center back or right back.

Brasesco, who featured for Racing Club in the 2010 Copa Libertadores, brings experience and skill to an area in which D.C. struggled last season.

CUNNINGHAM TRAINING WITH IK START

Jeff Cunningham, who was picked by the Columbus Crew in the Re-Entry Draft but has yet to sign with the club, is reportedly training with Norway's IK Start, the same team that previously employed Clarence Goodson and Hunter Freeman.

The club is not calling the visit a trial, but should the out-of-contract Cunningham impress, an offer wouldn't be out of the question. The Crew still maintains his MLS rights.

REVOLUTION SIGN DOMI

The New England Revolution signed French left back Didier Domi, the team announced on Tuesday.

Domi, 32, has had an extensive career in Europe, most recently playing for Greek power Olympiakos. Other teams on his resume include Espanyol, Newcastle and Paris-St. Germain. He should contend for the team's starting spot at left back.

What are your thoughts about the Lindsay injury? Think Brasesco can help stabilize D.C.'s defense? Do you see the Crew eventually signing Cunningham? Do you like the signing for New England?

  1. Has anyone seen Domi play? His age scares me especially as a left back, and he has only played 60 games over the last 4 years (15 games/yr). I am wondering if he is simply being brought in as an experienced player to help develop Seth Sinovic. Sinovic showed signs of being a future star at left back, but he definitely has some developing and refining to do.

  2. Tierney actually played in 5 different roles throughout the 2010 season, but left wing is his preferred position and definitely his best.

  3. He had 2 technically. He was lucky that the first assist got to the goal scorer. The second one was a great pass and just lucky that the ball went in. Still 2 assists though. Yanks abroad video has highlights of the goals.

  4. I thought Badilla was a centerback? Either way, I’m pretty sure they let him return to his club in Central America (I believe it was a loan).

  5. I guess Chris Thierney is now playing the left wing. He played he played both left back and wing last season. One more thing, whatever happens to costa rican left back Badilla? is he still injured? released? both?

  6. Lindsay’s injury occurred in a snowmobiling accident. Got thrown from the back and tore both his MCL and ACL. canadiansoccernews.com has more info

  7. Sucks for Toronto and Canada. Seems like that’s the luck of Canadiens, unless they’re playing hockey.

I’m hesitant to get excited about this Uruguayan defender. We haven’t had one good South American pickup in a long time. I watched Will Bruin today and was not impressed at all. He reminded me of the slow burly 40-year-olds playing pick-up with speedy 18 year-olds.

  8. O/T , but Hammers won 2-1 in first round of CCup semi final today. Spector had both assists (1 definitely, and some sources are crediting with 2)

  9. More coaches should grab decently big and fast strikers in the last round and convert them to left back. I mean it worked for Bornstein, at MLS club level at least.
