Tuesday Kickoff: Japan downs S. Korea, Rossi signs extension and more

Arch-rivals Japan and South Korea played a memorable Asian Cup semifinal on Tuesday that came down to dramatic penalty kicks. Kicks South Korea wasn't ready for.

Japan converted three of four penalties while South Korea missed all three attempts to send Japan to the Asian Cup Final, where the winner of Australia/Uzbekistan awaits.

Japan took a 2-1 lead on a controversial penalty call, but South Korea equalized in the final seconds of overtime to send the match to penalties.

Here are some other stories to get your Tuesday rolling:

ROSSI SIGNS EXTENSION

Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi is already his club's leading scorer, but now he could have much longer to add to that record-setting total after signing a three-year extension with the Spanish club.

Rossi has been the subject of several transfer rumors, with clubs such as Tottenham being linked to a move for the New Jersey native.

VAN BOMMEL JOINS MILAN

Dutch national team captain Mark Van Bommel has joined AC Milan on a free transfer after being allowed to leave by Bayern Munich.

A strained relationship between Van Bommel and Bayern Munich manager Louis Van Gaal helped push the move forward.

QUICK KICKS

Chelsea is closing in on David Luiz transfer.

After being denied the chance to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy, Real Madrid is set to add Emmanuel Adebayor.

Van Nistelrooy wasn't happy about being denied his Madrid move, so now he won't re-sign with Hamburg.

  1. Well now that’s one American Villan who’s getting playing time.

Hopefully something works out now for Lichaj, since it looks like Houllier will be sticking around for at least the season. He has way too much potential to not even be making the bench.

  2. *claps* Dempsey is my favorite player PERIOD. I have his USMNT jersey, his older Fulham kit and know the new forest green 3rd kit of his. Keep going Deuce, you’re a king. I definitely think that if Fulham stay up it’s solely because Deuce kept them up.

  3. Guzan’s loan to Hull got extended til end of Feb. Maybe he can prove himself worthy to be the no.1 at AV or at least showcase himself to the promoted clubs to the PL for next season

  4. O/T but can we give a round of applause to our boy Dempsey? He has 8 league goals for the season in 23 matches. Playing as a winger/striker for Fulham.

He could score up to 12 league goals by season’s end if there are no injury problems. That is pretty amazing. You guys can’t tell me that no bigger club won’t go for him come May if he finishes with 11-12 league goals? Everton, AV, Blackburn, Sunderland, Newcastle, they’d all love to get a hold of him.

  5. Adebayor to Madrid? They don’t want him. Should have signed Dzeko. Adebayor is a wonderful striker but he’s just not RM material.

  7. The January transfer window is just an excuse for clubs to make up for personnel mistakes.

Take away the January transfer window, make teams work together instead of just quitting and moving on.

    Rant over.

  8. “…where the winner of Australia/Uzbekistan awaits…” Can’t we just place Australia in the finals of every Asian Cup and call it quits?

  9. I’ve noticed that I now only see the diving/faking injury acts in Central/South American and European games. Hopefully it ends there, too.

  10. Ives’ tweet about the lack of Diving, rolling around, faking injuries in the Asian Cup game was spot on. So cool to see guys playing the game without all that.
