Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary

Barcelona and Real Madrid took care of business in the first legs of their respective Copa del Rey semifinal ties, both coming away with victories. If they can do the same on Wednesday, the soccer world will be guaranteed at least a third Clasico this season.

Barcelona is in the driver's seat after securing a 5-0 first-leg win over Almeria. Real Madrid was only able to muster a 1-0 victory at Sevilla and will look to hold on at home to advance to the final.

Outside of Spain there's plenty of action, too, including nearly a full complement of games in Serie A and six games in the Premier League including matches in which Americans Stuart Holden, Clint Dempsey and Jermaine Jones are starting. According to West Ham's team site, Jonathan Spector picked up a minor hamstring injury in training and is out for the match against Blackpool. In Scotland, Maurice Edu will look to build off the goal he scored over the weekend, as Rangers hosts Hearts of Midlothian in a key Scottish Premier League battle.

If you will be watching any or all of Wednesday's games, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. The TV schedule is after the jump:

  1. That recent goal you saw Edu score; he’s scored goals like that on a fairly regular basis at every level since he was in high school.

It’s not a new thing for him. He has always been a very versatile player. Why do you think BB moved him to CB for a while?

More likwly Rangers are desperately thin and need help everywhere. Eventually they may even line Mo up at CB.

  2. That’s why you have battling for places to earn berths in Champions League or Europa League, fights for relegation and promotion, and cup competitions.

  3. Being a fan of a Scottish Premier League team not named Celtic or Rangers, or being a fan of a La Liga team not named Real or Barca, must be absolutely horrible. The competitive imbalance is so tilted, it’s like having the Red Sox, Yankees, and 14 teams called the Pirates in the National League.

  4. Hmmm. Yanks Abroad is saying that Mo Edu played in an attacking midfield role today. I guess that recent goal has the Rangers thinking of possible new roles for him! (but can he be that same role for USMNT? things that make you go….)

  5. Good day for the new signings. Sturridge with a goal at Bolton, Suarez for Liverpool.

Bolton’s making me nervous though. After an awesome start to the season, they’re starting to show their weaknesses–namely the depth of their squad. As has become typical, though, good game for Holden.

  6. Sorry 92nd minute of the match Zubar attempts to give a back pass to the keeper and Sturridge puts in the back of the net. The poor keeper was having a wonderful game to.

  7. Holden named MothM. Don’t really see it. He played well, but didn’t really influnce the game to that level. (Nothing wrong with his effort – the game just didn’t find him a lot.)

  8. when I had the feed in the first half he had just picked up a yellow card for a stumble turned tackle. He’s playing his usual game, lots of energy, strong tackles and some decent passing

  9. Looks like Blackpool will go the way of many other strong starters… to the Championship. own 3-1 to west ham… oh, Keane scored for WH, and Mr. Adam put one in for Blackpool

  11. dempsey has looked pretty decent today, nice shot leads to a duff sitter (of course duff misses), and a nice piece of skill to bring ball down and then great defending by williamson
