The United States U-17s opened their run to Mexico in a big way with a 3-1 victory over Cuba on Monday in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Andrew Oliver earned a goal and an assist in the convincing victory.

Alfred Koroma opened the scoring for the U.S. before it took command with goals by Oliver and Esteban Rodriguez. Cuba was able to get on the board thanks to a goal from Dairon Perez. The U.S. squad's lone professional player, Jack McBean of the Los Angeles Galaxy, played the final 17 minutes in the victory.

The United States concludes group play on Friday against Panama. With a victory, the United States would go on to face the second place team from Group A (which includes Costa Rica, Haiti and El Salvador) in the quarterfinals for a berth in the U-17 World Cup in Mexico.

Think it's smooth sailing for Wilmer Cabrera's boys until the World Cup? Do you see Panama being more of a challenge than Cuba?

  1. Still stupid that the fate of qualifying for the U-17 and U-20 WC’s are determined by the QF’s only, but we know Jack is looking for the best way those Caribbean nations can qualify. We should qualify in both though. Two of the top players on this team didn’t play today with minor injuries, Guido and Pelosi.

  2. The win was nice and all, but I really don’t expect much from us until the U-20 level. They can do great or terrible, and I’m not sure it means much. By the U-20s guys are with clubs (overseas or MLS) or at least at top college programs, and one can get a better idea of where this generation of American talent stands. Below that level I don’t think US soccer has our potential pool as well covered.

  3. I didn’t see the game, but Adam, you called the victory convincing twice in the first two sentences. You are better than that man.
