Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

By FRANCO PANIZO

Clint Dempsey has made history.

Dempsey became the first American to score 10 goals in a Premiership season on Saturday, netting on fellow American Tim Howard in Fulham's 2-1 loss to Everton. The goal, which came off a one-timed left-footed shot, saw Dempsey break Brian McBride's record of goals scored in an EPL campaign. Dempsey has eight games left to build on his newly-acquired record.

Freddy Adu and Zak Whitbread found the back of the net for their respective clubs, too. Adu scored his second goal for Caykur Rizespor, hitting the winner in the club's 2-0 victory against Akhisar Belediyespor. Whitbread bagged his first goal for Norwich City, heading a free kick over Brad Guzan and into the net in Norwich's 1-1 draw with Hull City.

Maurice Edu also enjoyed success this weekend as Rangers defeated Celtic in overtime to claim the Scottish Co-operative Insurance Cup (Scottish League Cup). Edu started and played 120 minutes in Rangers' 2-1 triumph.

What do you think of Dempsey making history? How many more do you see him scoring this season? Impressed by Adu's right-footed finish? Surprised that was Whitbread's first goal with Norwich City? Think Edu should start for the U.S. national team against Argentina?

  1. Let me educatwe you a little:

    1) The rankings you refer to are based on NATIONAL TEAM PERFORMANCES for the last 3 euro/WC qualifiers and not the leagues within that nation. Even if you’d like to stretch it like that, he does not play for the Turkish Super league where all domestic turkish player are picked form (their current crop of domestic players do not have 1 player from the Turkish Bank Asya 1. Lig).

2)I still believe the quality of play in MLS is higher than the quality of play in Turkish Bank Asya 1. Lig (Hey based on your argument above this is where we get some of our Nats players, as opposed to Adu’s leagues that contribute none).

3)Benny and Torres wer not billed as the American Pele, and if you are gonig to sit ther with a straight gace and tell me the level on play in turkish division 2 is better than the first divisions of Mexico and Denmark..i’ll just call you blind…(again you used NATIONAL team Rankings to justify your position and not individual league rankings)

    4) I’ll give you that Donova was a bust in Germany TWICE. But he sure as hell was a hit in EPL, arguably the best league in the world.

Adu on the other hand was a bust in Portugal TWICE, France and Greece HE DOES NOT HAVE THE SPEED, TECHNICAL ABILITY AND SKILL SETS TO COMPETE ANYWHERE, he proved by gettign bounced to RSL and being bounced all over Europe….But seems like he’s well adapted at the second division in Turkey where his HACK skills are put to good use.

Stop drinking the Koll-aid man, he’s a hack and wil lalways be, we will never seem him called up to the Nat team again, after this season he’ll disappear into the world of loanned out hacks…..

  2. Haterade neutralizer 101: Adu plays in the Turkish Bank Asya 1. Lig, a league more technically sound than MLS (where we sometimes pick players for our national team!), a league that prepares and produces players/teams for the Turkish Super lig ranked 15th in the UEFA league rankings…..ahead of the Danish(16th) and Scottish(26) leagues

To summarize it for you he’s playing at a higher level than Benny, Torres and Donovan. With that said he IS lighting it up, scoring goals, making assists and becoming that impact player for Rizespor. When was the last time you heard Benny or Torres, who we all know can play, being man of the match or scoring goals or having multiple assists???? Does Anybody rag on Donovan for playing in MLS? No, because even though he couldn’t cut it in Germany (and he’s one of the best players we have!!!)he came to MLS and showed that he has the speed, technical ability and skill set to compete at any level. So does Freddy Adu, a.k.a Freddinho…..

  3. Damn…Adu is playing in a league of high technical caliber than MLS, had 87 appearances for DC united, 11 appearances for Real saltlakes had 11 appearances for Benifica, 9 for Monaco, 4 for Belenenses, 9 for Aris and you say what?? hasnt shown any thing at top levels of competition?? First PLAYER EVER to score a hattrick in both an U-17 and U-20 world cup(first player ever), selected in the U-23 tournament Best XI(2008 Summer Olympics). He’s only 21 mind you.

Before you try to serve the “Haterade” know who or what you are talking about first. Its pointless to argue…..

  4. Because prior to Holden going down we had four CM who were ahead of him (Bradley, Jones, Holden, Edu). I like Torres, but in my opinion his style doesn’t quite mesh with the Nats (of course maybe he just never got enough playing time to gel with team).

  5. I really don’t think that Mike Bradley has many haters. Some people are simply brazen enough to suggest that Holden, Edu, and Jones are on better form, and should be ahead of him on the depth chart right now. I guess it doesn’t matter now that Holden is out for 6 months.

  6. Why has Torres fallen off of Bradley’s radar? He seems to go the full 90 every week for Pachuca.

He was called up numerous times when he was a bench player but now that he has evolved into a starter he’s no longer useful to the team? I know our mid is stacked but still thought Torres would get more looks going into the Gold Cup. I was wrong.

“Bolton Wanderers midfielder Stuart Holden is expected to be sidelined for six months after sustaining a knee injury in the weekend’s game against Manchester United.

As a result, the 25-year-old will also not feature in the United States’ Gold Cup campaign this June.”

Somebody find Jonny Evans and kick his @$$

  8. Fulham is the perfect fit. If they could keep their top guys healthy long enough to gel some more, than it would be an even more perfect for Dempsey. I think he could eventually link up very well with Dembele, but they’re still figuring out how to play alongside one another. I’d rather see Fulham find a couple more players to play alongside Dempsey, than see Demspey move to a bigger club. I think Clint really thrives in the underdog role that he has with Fulham.

  9. Gio was a beast today. He really does fit in La Liga. It was probably a good idea to leave Barca but should have stayed in Spain.

  10. I rather he be on a team thats a midtable team in the EPL and always be a lock to start.

We need him to start, he should go to everton or stay at fulham.

    Dear God… the horror.

  12. Gio has had a pretty decent career. Had a great world cup where he was voted 2nd best young player. After that Harry wanted him back but never really gave him an opportunity (both their fault). But now he is Racing’s best player (no exaggeration, talk to any racing fan). To compare him to Adu is criminal. Especially considering Adu plays in an almost amateur league and has never shown anything at top levels of competition (youth teams don’t count). I’d recommend you start watching more football since it seems you are a little out of touch with the footballing world.

  13. And as usual Dempsey’s accomplishments get highlighted…to not many rounds of applause. Yeah the team lost and yesah Holden’s 26 stitches are more dramatic -and yeah Adu scoring is more rare.

Still best-ever (US) goal scorer in EPL is big deal; especially when Clint is #7 scorer (tied) in league. Ahead of names like Drogba and Torres. Ok both are having seasons below their usual standard; but still they also get fed the ball by higher-caliber talent than Clint. No offense to Zamora et al.

Here’s hoping Clint nicks a few more before end of season…and does the same to Argentina.

My guess is Clint ends season with 12 EPL goals; and outodes himself next season.

  14. Hmm, with Gio scoring for Racing Santander and Adu scoring for Rizespor, will we see the long awaited Gio v Adu when US plays Mexico in Gold Cup Final this summer? Similar to the debate between Messi and C. Ronaldo, this would be a great matchup of who’s been hyped more and produced the least, Gio (Barca->Tottenham->League1->La Liga) or Adu (Portugal->Ligue1->Greek SuperLeague->Turkish 2nd Div).

That said, I’m happy that Adu is getting minutes & producing for Rizespor. I still hope to see the Adu that I saw in the U20 WC vs Brazil be able to do the same at the club & country level.

  15. I hope Jozy starts scoring for club and/or country soon. I would really like to see him paired up with Agudelo at some point, but I almost don’t even want to see him on the field anymore. I mean, I guess he is still strong and fast, and his passing has improved in the last year. Even with that, throw us a bone and score a damn goal!

  16. Every time one of our guys scores a goal it seems like the commenters here blame poor defending or say the keeper made a blunder.

But my God, the keeper made a blunder on the Adu goal.

  17. I think Holden’s injury shows us why its good that we keep arguing over who should start in the midfield for the USMNT. When have all these guys ever been healthy at the same time?

  18. and Dempsey just keeps chugging along…He always links well with Bobby Z so he could be in line for 2-4 more to finish up another fine campaign. Here is to hoping Holden isn’t out for too long
