First blood to the Timbers.

The first match of the Cascadia Summit featured the Seattle Sounders facing the Portland Timbers and it was the visiting Timbers who struck first in what should be one of Major League Soccer's best rivalries.

Jorge Perlaza and Kenny Cooper scored the goals to help lift the Timbers to a 2-0 victory at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Washington.

The match was the first of the Cascadia Summit, a three-time, round-robin tournament featuring the Sounders, Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps. The match was also the first meeting between the long-time rivals as MLS opponents.

The Timbers take on the Whitecaps today, with Seattle returning to action Sunday against Vancouver.

Here are the highlights:

  1. I agree with all of what you say, Ken. Except the part about Evans being interesting. I don’t understand Sigi’s love affair with this guy. He’s injury-prone, bad first touch, etc. He must provide really great locker-room leadership or something.

  2. The midfields from both sides were constrained by the field width — Starfire is very narrow, so there’s not a lot of room to play in the center. It will be interesting to see Zizzo and Evans on a bigger field.

  3. Good points. Both teams looked like they still had kinks to work out. Portland’s defense did hold up in the second half, but they had to scramble at times and maybe got a little bit lucky on a couple plays. I thought Brunner and Purdy played well for them. Zizzo did look good. The stars for both teams – Cooper and Montero – didn’t do much (until Cooper’s late goal) but both players were marked well. Good atmosphere for a pre-season game. Should be fun watching these two teams play.

  4. I was really impressed with Portland’s defense. Seattle dominated possession in the second half but could not manage to break through and have clear chances. Fernandez and Zakuwani really came alive in the second half. Fernandez had two good chances that he missed, but you can’t blame the guy. It is still pre-season. I think he is going to be an important player for Seattle this season. I was glad to see Kenny Cooper score, but besides the goal, he was pretty invisible most of the night. Then again, Portland’s midfield had trouble breaking through Alonso. Sal Sizzo looked good all night.
