Friday Ticker: Gerrard Out for Season, PFA finalists named and more

Liverpool's topsy turvy season continues as word has emerged that captain Steven Gerrard looks to be out for the season.

The Reds' captain suffered another injury set back in training after only returning a week ago, and manager Kenny Dalglish's outlook is grim.

The loss of Gerrard will put increased pressure on the Reds already thin central midfield of Christian Poulson, Lucas Leiva and Jonjo Shelvey, who is due to return in the near future from his own injury struggles.

The news comes just days after Danish defender Daniel Agger was ruled out out for the duration of the 2010/2011 season with damage to a tendon in his knee suffered over the weekend in the loss to West Brom.

Add those injuries to that of Glen Johnson, Martin Kelly and Fabio Aurelio, and Liverpool will be finishing the season with a short-handed squad.

Here are a few other stories from across the way to keep you current on all things soccer:

ADEBAYOR GIVEN GREEN LIGHT TO LEAVE MAN CITY

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini today told the press that he would have no issue letting striker Emmanuel Adebayor extend his stay at Real Madrid with a permanent deal.

The Togo international has proved to be a solid signing by Jose Mourinho as evidenced by his clinical display against 10-man Tottenham in the Champions League tie at the BernabĂ©u.  The lanky striker has five goals in 10 matches for the Galacticos.

Adebayor has scored 10 goals in his last 15 matches against Spurs in all competitions.

IN-DEMAND NEYMAR ADMITS PERSONAL INTEREST IN ITALY

The Brazilian ace has been in fine form this season and reportedly has a host of clubs showing interest in whisking the striker away from Santos FC this summer.  Recently, Neymar admitted the allure of Serie A, but insisted that he may not be ready to leave Santos just yet.

Neymar has previously stated his admiration for the Premier League as well as Spain's La Liga and Germany's Bundesliga.  Add Serie A onto that list, and one really can't rule out any destination for the 19-year-old.

PFA & YOUNG PFA NOMINEES REVEALED

The nominees for the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) and the Young PFA awards came out today, and all the usual suspects were accounted for along with some other stand outs.  Gareth Bale and Samir Nasri appear to be among the front runners, but Charlie Adam of Blackpool and West Ham's Scott Parker join the party as well.  The list, in full, includes Gareth Bale (Tottenham), Samir Nasri (Arsenal), Carlos Tevez (Man. City), Charlie Adam (Blackpool), Scott Parker (West Ham), Rafael Van der Vaart (Tottenham) and Nemanja Vidic (Man. United).

As for the Young PFA award, the nominees here could be confused for the senior candidates.  Bale and Nasri are again on the bill and joined by Seamus Coleman (Everton), Joe Hart (Man. City), Javi Hernandez (Man. United), Nani (Man. United) and Jack Wilshere (Arsenal).

HARRY REDKNAPP SHEDS LIGHT ON LENNON EUROPEAN OMMISSION

Mystery continues to surround Tottenham's under-the-weather winger, Aaron Lennon and his last-minute withdrawal from the London-based side's drubbing at the hands of Real Madrid.

Harry Redknapp has shed some light on the situation, claiming that Lennon hadn't been well days before the game.  Such was his illness, that the speedster claimed minutes before the game that he "might only last five or ten minutes."

What do you make of Liverpool's chances the rest of the season?  Will Adebayor make a permanent move and continue to do well in Spain's capital?  Is Italy a good desination for Neymar?

  1. Liverpool need to invest on a creative midfielder someone with the characteristics of XABI ALONSO, a player like PASTORE would be perfect

  2. Berbatov has been screwed by Man U this season. He was carrying the team at the beginning and has been relegated to making cameo appearances… I know that that is needed as a team player, but come on, he was solid for them and then got screwed hard. Reason he isn’t on there is because he was screwed by his own team dropping him.

  3. So Stevie G has played his last match for Liverpool. After the Reds miss out on Europe, Gerrard, Reina, Johnson, Meireles, Kuyt and Suarez will all hand in transfer requests.

It is going to be an interesting summer for LFC.
