In Reserve: RSL takes Rocky Mountain matchup, Union tops Red Bulls and more

Real Salt Lake's Rocky Mountain victory wasn't limited to just Wednesday night's first-team action.

The RSL reserves topped those of the Colorado Rapids, 2-0, Thursday afternoon in the second reserve match for both clubs. Former New York Red Bull Conor Chinn and Collen Warner tallied the goals for RSL, which improved to 1-1 in reserve play.

The news wasn't all good for Salt Lake, though, which lost striker Paulo Jr. to an apparent hamstring injury midway through the second half and was reduced to 10 men for the final 19 minutes after Chris Schuler was sent off for taking down Colorado's Andre Akpan.

Here are a couple of other results from the last wave of MLS Reserve League matches:

PHILADELPHIA 2, NEW YORK 1

Chris Agorsor's 81st-minute goal was the difference, as the Union topped the Red Bulls on Sunday afternoon to complete a sweep of New York over the weekend.

Jack McInerney and John Rooney swapped goals in the 50th and 52nd minutes, respectively, before Agorsor pounced on a McInerney rebound and touched it past keeper Alex Horwath for the decisive tally.

The Red Bulls had a potential second goal wiped off the board in the second half, when Marcos Paullo, who assisted on the New York goal, was ruled offside after scoring off a Rooney cross.

HOUSTON 1, SPORTING KC 0

Jason Garey scored the lone goal in the 67th minute, and the Dynamo opened reserve play with a victory over Sporting Kansas City in Houston on Monday.

Garey got onto the end of Francisco Navas Cobo's long free kick and headed it past Erik Kronberg for the only score of the match.

Jamaican midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson, long thought to be a target of the Dynamo, played for Houston as part of an extended trial with the club. Another notable for the Dynamo is that Colin Clark, on his way back from a second ACL injury, started and played 82 minutes in his continued rehabilitation process.

Two members of SKC's U-16 juniors club, Wes White and Nate Opperman, started for the visitors.

  1. Yeah, I found that strange as well. He doesn’t get 90 minutes but he plays in every game, you’d think that was enough. But maybe it’s because he’s young and relatively new and they’re still working on some things with him.

  2. Simple… John Rooney. He looked pretty good in the pre-season. And of course it’d be an interesting story for fans to follow.

With the arrival of DeRosario, and Lindpere and Richards already playing pretty forward … the question is where would he play?… might be great off the bench for now replacing any of those aforementioned vets until he can prove himself as a first team starter.

  3. I love RSL reserves winning the Reserve Rocky Mountain Cup but the news about Paulo Jr is bad. I’m hoping this isn’t too serious.

  4. I hope Paulo’s injury isn’t too serious. He is an exciting young talent for RSL and the league as a whole…hopefully he isn’t out long.
