Saturday England Rewind: United edges Everton, Torres scores for Chelsea and more

Manchester United is now one step closer to the Premier League title after narrowly beating Everton today at Old Trafford by a score of 1-0.

True to form, United broke the deadlock on the 84th minute through a 'Chicharito' Hernandez header past Tim Howard.  The U.S. National Team keeper had been a rock throughout the match, and it was a cruel end for Everton, which was defensively sound until the goal.

The goal was the 19th of Chicharito's debut campaign, and Manchester United now sits six points above a resurgent Chelsea team, which also won today.

Here are some other results from Saturday's Premier League action:

TORRES FINALLY ENDS SCORING DROUGHT

Fernando Torres has broken his scoring duck at last in Chelsea's 3-0 win over West Ham today since joining the London club in January.

After setting a British record transfer fee of £50 million, immense amounts of pressure were heaped on the Spaniard to perform.  Torres had gone 732 minutes without scoring for Chelsea but it took him just eight minutes to net after coming on as a substitute for Didier Drogba.

The goal fell between strikes from Frank Lampard, who opened scoring for the Blues on the 44th minute, and a Malouda screamer from 22 yards out in stoppage time to seal the win.

TOTTENHAM HELD BY STUBBORN WEST BROM

Tottenham Hotspur was frustrated by a determined West Brom side that came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw.

Peter Odemwingie gave Roy Hodgson's men a shock lead early in the fifth minute after he curled his effort beyond Gomes from distance.  However, Pavlyuchenko levelled the score on 26 minutes after some careless defending from West Brom.

Jermain Defoe's 100th goal for Spurs looked to be the game-winner, but with nine minutes remaining, Simon Cox equalized with an effort just beyond the keeper's reach to secure a hard-earned point for the Baggies.

West Brom continues its impressive return to form since the arrival of former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson and is now five points clear of the relegation zone.

LIVERPOOL ROUT BIRMINGHAM

Birmingham was drubbed today by a clinical Liverpool side by a score of 5-0 that saw Argentine Maxi Rodriguez score a hat-trick.

Rodriguez was the first to react to Ben Foster's spilled save off a Jay Spearing shot early in the seventh minute to begin the scoring.  Dirk Kuyt doubled the lead 16 minutes later with a third attempt on goal. During the fracas, Ben Foster stayed down injured after a collision with Birmingham captain Stephen Carr.

The Argentine added another goal on the 66th minute after some neat work from Luis Suarez and got the hat-trick six minutes later.

In an afternoon of unlikely goal-scorers, Maxi Rodriguez was joined on the score sheet by Joe Cole, who scored just minutes after coming on as a late substitute to complete the rout.

The win means that Liverpool sits three points behind fifth-placed Tottenham having played a game more.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa drew with Stoke, Newcastle and Blackpool ended level and Fulham tied Wolverhampton, all by a score of 1-1.  Sunderland beat Wigan by a score of 4-2 at home in the Stadium of Light.

What do you think of the results?  Do Chelsea really have a shot at making a title run?  Are Liverpool in contention for fifth place?  Who gets relegated this season?

  1. Got to admit Tim Howard is a beast, he blocked chicharito earlier shot in spectacular fashion and many other shots. we hope they meet again in the Gold Cup Final. Jack Wilshire PFA young award of course hes from England. Ill take 19 goals 6 assist (7goals being game winners in all competitions) than 2 goals and 9 assist anyday…

  2. I am not a fan of players that score most of their goals like Chicharito, but that doesn’t mean I can’t give them credit. Being there at right time is his best quality.

I remember at one point when Ruud van Nistelrooy played for Real Madrid, he had not scored a goal from outside the penalty box for more than a year.

That is what they are there for. So as long as he keeps scoring Man U shouldn’t worry about how he scores.

  4. Sky Sports gave Specs a 7 and said he played well. Not a bad review against Chelsea. He had some nice passes, good runs and even some pretty good D. At least we have one central midfielder getting playing time in the EPL!
