Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

TorresChelsea (ISIPhotos.com)

Four games remain in the English Premier League season and if Chelsea is going to have any chance of catching Manchester United atop the standings, the Blues will likely have to win every one of them.

The first of the four comes today in the form of a stiff test from London rival Tottenham, which is trying to do it's on catching up by closing the four-point gap behind Manchester City for fourth place. A tie or loss would likely be a crucial blow to either team's chances of catching their Manchester-based targets.

Saturday's schedule of action has plenty of intrigue, from Leeds United's dying quest to earn a League Championship playoff spot against fellow playoff contender Burnley, to Clint Dempsey's chance to build on his mid-week brace against Sunderland.

If you will be watching today's action, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. Tottenham got screwed for sure, but I don’t think it’s right to say it decided the race for the Champions League spot. Tottenham was already behind the eight ball before this result, with a game against Liverpool and an away tilt at City still to come and down four points. That said, this is at least one nail in their coffin.

  2. I am not a fan of either team but this is not even close to the same thing. It is comical to try and compare the two.

The Barca Champions League match was impossible to watch (except for Messi’s magical runs of course.) Every second someone is grabbing their face or yelling at the ref to give a card. The match was a complete and total embarrassment and it was obvious to anybody that didn’t have their “Barca Blinders” on.

  3. Just got done watch San Jose/Philly…what an absolutely terrible match. First of all, the officiating was terrible yet again. Suspect red and a suspect penalty and several other bizarre and missed calls. Secondly, I am tired of Carlos Ruiz. He spends 3/4 of the match flopping around and whining. Hey, Peter Novak he isn’t good anymore. Play Mwanga. I don’t care if he has a whopping two goals this year, he doesn’t bring anything to the table outside of annoying the opposing team. I’d rather watch Stoke play pre Owen Coyle Bolton squads than watch another match like that. I’m not a believer in the “total football” nonsense, but please try not to turn the matches into a North Broad St. gang fight.

  4. Somehow this doesn’t seem as ironic as it should be.

Barcelona loses after having a completely legitimate goal disallowed and a pretty shoddy penalty given.

  5. It’s late in the season. Ronaldo’s injury prone. Is it really so ridiculous for him to rest a few players, let alone one?

    Bugger off.

  6. Sure, both goals shouldn’t have counted, but Chelsea keeps the PL race open for another week. Now if Arsenal can win tomorrow it’s game on for the PL title. Knowing Arsenal they’ll be winning 1-0 and then let up an own goal to tie in the 89th minute and then their goalie will spill the ball straight to the feet of Chicharito in the 3rd minute of stoppage time to give Utd the victory tomorrow.

  7. Real Madrid loses at home to a Zaragoza team fighting relegation, while Ronaldo watched from the stands.

Thanks Mou. Are you going to blame the ref again?

  8. But wait, I thought that if I am not a fan of Barca I need to turn in my soccer fan card. At least that’s what professor Xavi says.

  9. Spurs get screwed twice this game, both goals should not have been goals. Kalou was off and the ball was not over the line

  10. Arsenal fan here so I naturally hate Spurs but what they are doing is hardly like what Barca did, come on now. They arent begging for a yellow after every touch, they are only asking the ref to not cost them points. It is not even remotely the same, stop being so sensitive about people calling out your beloved Barca

  11. That’s not a penalty because the ref knew he owed ‘Spurs a break.. Mind you, if it was still 1-0, that WOULD have been given as a penalty. Good call by the ref.

  12. Looked into that article a little more and found out that your article did not quote everything McAllister said:

Try this one and pay particular attention to the comments fromthe fans:

    http://www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-sport/aston-villa-fc/aston-villa-news/2011/04/27/aston-villa-forgotten-man-michael-bradley-could-still-have-a-chance-to-earn-a-permanent-move-to-villa-97319-28589879/

The McAllister quotes your article missed:

“It’s true that it has been hard to play him in the situation we have been in at a time when we have had senior experienced players available.

“That is purely all that has held him back, nothing else, because his attitude has been top drawer.

“He is a fantastic professional for such a young guy – he is captain of his country, don’t forget, and he is a top player.

“He has done enough on the training ground to suggest there might be something come the end of the season because he is an honest, hard-working guy as well as a good player.”

McAllister believes Bradley still has the potential to be a goalscoring midfield hero at Villa depending on how the other summer midfield business pans out.

Villa must also resolve the future of Nigel Reo-Coker, who is out of contract at the end of the season, and Robert Pires, whose short-term deal expires at the end of next month.

“Michael has definitely got a goal in him and is someone who can take responsibility of shooting from distance,” added McAllister.

“I think Stiliyan Petrov was a player who did that during his seasons at Celtic and we’ve seen it a little bit here at Villa that he is capable of scoring from distance.

“Before Stiliyan the last guy who could do it was probably Thomas Hitzlsperger.

“But Michael is not shy about taking responsibility of having a pop from 20 or 25 yards out.”

Now why bother to compare MB to “The Hammer” if the decision has already been made to cut the guy loose?

  13. It doesn’t matter what the reason.

How is now defensible? Oh, it’s your team now so it’s justifiable?

The general hypocrisy on this board is astounding.

  14. Personally, I think the whole of the ball over the line is an impossible standard to judge, unless you’re situated beyond the goal line..and even then, it would be tough.. If there is green showing — if the bottom of the ball has rolled beyond the line and the ref can see green between the ball and the goal line, he’d have to give the goal every time.
