This Weekend’s Soccer on TV (& SBI’s Top Ten Matches to Watch)

It is no longer a battle between championship contenders, but Manchester United's battle against Arsenal this weekend will still make for great theatre.

Arsenal has dropped points in recent weeks and has fallen behind Chelsea in the Premier League standings, meaning this weekend's showdown vs. Manchester United will be more about pride than trying to win a title.

Chelsea still has a legitimate chance of catching Man Utd, but the Blues will need to beat London rival Tottenham to do so.

The MLS schedule is loaded this weekend, with Real Salt Lake visiting Portland as it tries to erase the memories of the CONCACAF Champions League Final, while FC Dallas takes on Los Angeles without injured star David Ferreira.

Here is this weekend's Soccer on TV:

SBI'S TOP TEN MATCHES TO WATCH

1. Arsenal vs. Manchester United. The title won't be on the line, but there's enough quality and bad blood to make this must-see TV.

2. Chelsea vs. Tottenham. London rivals square off with each needing the three points badly. Blues still have title hopes while Tottenham try to stay in race for fourth place.

3. Sao Paulo vs. Santos. Brazilian powerhouses collide in a match-up featuring plenty of young stars.

4. Portland Timbers vs. Real Salt Lake. The best team in MLS travels to face arguably the toughest home crowd to play in front of. Will RSL feel a CONCACAF hangover and drop points for the first time this season?

5. Bayern Munich vs. Schalke 04. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer takes on the team most likely to sign him in the summer. Bayern needs this one badly.

6. FC Dallas vs. Los Angeles Galaxy. No David Ferreira, so how will Dallas deal with the surging Galaxy? Not sure, but it should be fun to watch.

7. Chivas Guadalajara vs. Monterrey. The newly-crowned CONCACAF champions face Chivas in a must-win game to keep its Mexican playoff hopes alive. Nothing wrong with watching to root against them.

8. New York Red Bulls vs. Sporting Kansas City. Want a game sure to have some goals? This is your best bet. It would be a miracle if we don't see at least four goals in this one.

9. Manchester City vs. West Ham United. West Ham looks destined for relegation, but an upset of City could breath some life into a dying survival challenge.

T10. Houston Dynamo vs. D.C. United. Charlie Davies will look to add to his league-high goal tally against a stingy Dynamo defense.

T10. UNAM Pumas vs. Club America. Much like Monterrey, Club America needs a win against first-place Pumas to boost its flagging playoff hopes.

  1. I guess “goal fest” was an over estimation.

(SBI-It was a reasonable prediction given the Red Bulls recent goal-scoring rate and Kansas City’s defensive record. Might have been one too if New York hadn’t wasted chances in the early part of the match.)

  2. cablevision does carry galavision. its ch 198 i believe. i have cablevision and i get it. telefutura OWNS galavision, so if you have one, you have the other. do some research bro

  3. Of course you’re not, Mexico beats Brazil nowadays more often than not! And as a Mexican fan who respects the MLS and tips his hat to RSL I find your comments immensely hypocritical. First of all the two players who according to you were flopping pansies were subbed because of injuries and the rest were not Mexican. That they were wasting time like it was no one’s business, thats another matter. I see it as respect for RSL, and what was at stake. Now go watch Dani Alves be an upstanding example of gallantry.

  4. No there not, flopping pansies are never worthy champions, but it seems that classless teams always win these days, I’m Brazilian and I know what felipe Melo did so that’s another thing. i’m not a huge fan of mexican futebol.

  5. “Chivas Guadalajara vs. Monterrey. The newly-crowned CONCACAF champions face Chivas in a must-win game to keep its Mexican playoff hopes alive. Nothing wrong with watching to root against them”

Che pendejo. Chivas is the epitome of evertything I hate about Mexican football. Vargas and and Justino Compean can suck it hard.

    Viva Nuevo Leon!

  6. “The toughest home crowd to play against”? lol, come on Ives. Let them play more than two games at home before making proclamations like that.

(SBI-What part of “Arguably” did you not comprehend, or did you just choose to ignore that?)

  7. I think it depends on the DirecTV package you have. I get Galavision with my DTV package. Sure, it’s in Spanish, but it’s better than nothing I guess…

  8. I don’t. Nor would I get that channel if my provider offered it, which it doesn’t.

MLS will never break into the “big four” of American sports until it gets all its games on (at least) regional channels IN ENGLISH that can be picked up by DirecTV or whatever. Nothing wrong with simulcasting in spanish, but having games only on spanish-speaking channels is alienating many would-be viewers, no pun intended.

Ha. have you all not learned no to root against us? We put ourselves in tough situations because that’s when we’re at our best.

(SBI-It was a friendly jab. I’ve got utmost respect for Monterrey. They’re a worthy champion.)

  10. I don’t. Cablevision doesn’t carry Galavision. But since it’s a “national” channel, you can’t get it on MatchDay Live or Direct Kick, even if Galavision isn’t carried in your area. Not cool.

(it makes me sad that of the ~30 Spanish-channel MLS games, about 20 are on Galavision and only about 10 are on Telefutura, which I do get).

  11. I read somewhere that Dortmund could clinch the title this weekend, that should be one to watch. Germany knows how to celebrate when winning something.

And just think how much more interesting the German league is. Last year Hanover almost got relegated. This year they were challenging for the Champions League.

So the last 5 years champions could be…

    Dortmund
    Munich
    Wolfsburg
    Munich
    Stuttgart

Much more interesting than the crud the EPL puts forth.

  12. The first time a Saturday game on ESPN2 is on at a decent hour and I have to take a test this is ridiculous. Good thing is none of these games can be any worse than the Barce Madrid game
