UEFA Champions League: Your Running Commentary

English rivals. A rematch of the 2008 UEFA Champions League final. Must-see TV.

Chelsea and Manchester United take their domestic rivalry back to the European stage in Wednesday's UCL first-leg quarterfinal match at Stamford Bridge (2:45 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel). United is plenty clear of Chelsea in the Premier League race, but the Blues won their last matchup and will look to take the edge in the confines of their home stadium.

Another must-see TV candidate is Barcelona, which will look to put upstart Shakhtar Donetsk in its place at Camp Nou in the first leg of their quarterfinal series (2:45 p.m., Fox Soccer Plus/FoxSoccer.tv). Barca would be foolish to overlook its Ukranian opponent, though, in the aftermath of what Schalke did to favored Inter Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday.

If you will be watching any or all of Wednesday's UEFA Champions League action, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the games!

  1. Who cares? Copa Libertadores is much better, and they aren’t such babies about shutting down every stream on the web. LDU Quito-Independiente was better than any of this Eurotool garbage. Admit it, most of yuu follow EPL cuz you only speak English.

  2. I believe United beat Chelsea in the league twice that year, so there wouldn’t be much to complain about.

  3. Go watch a 2002 video of Manchester vs Chelsea maybe you will find another miss call to justify the no call from this game.

  4. Thank you. Torres gets clipped on his right foot. Did he embellish? Absolutely. He was trying to get that rightfully earned penalty kick from moments earlier.

  5. Gah, call that penalty non-call revenge for last season when a three-miles-offside Drogba scored on United to give Chelsea the title.

  6. Absolute mugging in the penalty area. Unreal. As for the “blatant” dive from Torres as Ives called it. Well…Torres’ back foot clipped the defender’s leg. Penalty…heck no! But the contact certainly put Torres off-balance…the rest he embellished. I’ve seen MUCH worse in the theatrics dept not get called.

Ives – your glee towards Torres’ failure so far is poor form. You should be indifferent if you want to be called a legit reporter. Well, it comes as no surprise to me as your hatred for Arsenal is clear as day. Tactically, Spurs and Arsenal played identically against their Spanish counterparts on the road. Arsenal almost won the 2 leg event and yet you crucified them. Spurs gets dismantled…and not a peep.

I’ll give it to you, your site is FANTASTIC as a source of info and your traveling to Costa Rica clearly illustrates your passion for the game. However, I wish your commentary would be less biased.

(SBI-Kimo, your perceived biases that I supposedly have are in your head. I call it like I see it and in the case of Arsenal and Torres both have given plenty of reason to criticize them for coming up short or being very expensive flops. Why exactly is it “poor form” for me to offer commentary on these things? That’s what journalists around the world do. Are all the big-named British media also at fault when they offer up very similar observations? Nope, not really.

If you have an issue it could be because I’ve been harsh on teams/players you like, so if anything, you might want to consider that the bias isn’t mine, but rather yours. I’ve got no dog in these fights. I can appreciate Arsenal for the quality of soccer it usually plays, and I enjoyed watching an in-form Torres as much as anybody, but when they falter badly, they’re going to get criticized. That’s part of my job.)

  7. How do you not call that? You only more blatant penalty possible would be if Vidic pulled out a knife and stabbed someone.

That is one of the easiest penalty calls an official will ever have to make. And he calls NOTHING.

  8. I’m watching Chelsea v United….not much going on really. One nice goal by United and Torres being horrible are basically it.
