Adu scores winner for Rizespor

Freddy Adu scored his fourth goal of the season for Caykur Rizespor on Sunday, netting the winner in the club's 3-1 victory over Tavsanli Linyitspor.

Adu got on the end of a cross and powered it home with a diving header in the first half. The goal marked the second consecutive game Adu has scored in, and also helped keep Rizespor in a promotion playoff spot with one game remaining in the season.

  1. Messi or David Ferreira aren’t very big but you don’t see them getting pushed off the ball.

It was never his size, it was that he was obviously weak and puny; constantly getting pushed off the ball. And it doesn’t help that he is slow. Hopefully he has taken the time to get stronger.

  2. Absolutely.

If he had just scored 4 goals in 9 games, then his confidnce would be up and Sacha is a very big “confidence” player.

I’d call Sacha up too. He is much more physical than Adu and would be one of the few US midfielders other than the dynamic duo who is a serious offensive threat.

  3. Those two are too versatile to make a good comparison. If he could just be as good as David Ferreia that would be a start.

  4. One very big difference, Nani is a LOT faster. Nani and Sneidjer also seem to have more physical presence than Adu. If what you say is true then that would help.

If they get promoted and he has a good year next year in Turkey though, then who knows?

  5. 5 goals in 20 appearances is 1 goal every 4 appearances, not very good for an attacking player.

  6. Right? He should stick with the team for the highlight music alone. On an entirely different note: Eff the Lakers. They showed their true colors today (something akin to a fecal brown) getting swept out of the playoffs with zero fight and something approaching 0 Kelvin in class. A fitting end for ‘The Zenmaster’.

  7. I honestly think he could fill the Donovan/Dempsey roles in our 4-4-2/4-2-2-2 if he really worked towards being defensively sound and in good shape. Those are things that he could definitely add, especially considering his age.

  8. Most of the things holding Freddy back are himself. I think he’s really getting past his inflated ego and work rate( although I think he’s already shown an improvement in work rate), then all there is to do is to teach him better defense in terms of positioning and skills, which is not a daunting task at all.

  10. Oh, I”m absolutely NOT giving up on Adu. But again, internationally (ie: USMNT), can I see him playing another other positions for us other than withdrawn forward or A-mid? No. Now, if he evolved in an A-mid who tracks back, who fights for balls, who provides some shape to the defense, and has a work rate…those would increase the chances he’d get back into the top 30 a lot quicker. B/c at his best, he finishes (probably better than anyone in our current top 30 other than Donovan and maybe Dempsey….Agudelo it’s too soon to judge), he has the ability to beat people on the dribble (again, we don’t have a huge pool of players who can do that), he hits a beautifully weighted ball (great asset for a distributor). And he’s still young.

He needs to decide if he’s content to be Jovan Kirovski (ie: getting paid a better wage than he’d get in MLS or a lesser league) for sitting on the bench. Or is he prepared to do what he has to do in order to become a competitor for a USMNT starting spot? If he is determined to compete, than he’ll turn down possible transfer spots for bigger “rep” sides or he might even negotiate a lower salary in order to end up with a team that gives a good chance to start.

  11. Since he’s fallen off, I’ve always assumed that his limited physical capabilities meant that Freddy would never really be able to succeed at a higher level. But it occurs to me now that Luca Modric is no bigger than Freddy is. Obviously he’s a really long way from Modric, but I can see that being a model for what he could do if things worked out for him.

  12. The main reason I’m not going to give up on Adu is the fact that Nani, not too long ago, wasn’t really a great defender, or all too willing, but Sir Alex Ferguson turned that around real quick. Of course, that’s Sir Alex Ferguson, we really don’t know how good Adu’s coach is.

Something I noticed in his time with Aris was the fact that he was actually tracking back defensively. Not only that, but he was getting really, REALLY scrappy. I’m talking Floyd Mayweather scrappy, which is good. He knows that with his size and lack of strength, he can pick at players just enough to mess with their dribble, and not enough to get a foul called. He turned an apparent weakness into a strength. Wesley Sneidjer is kind of the same in that he’s a small guy who loves to play really close to the lone striker making space for him, but he helps on defense. I think that’s the kind of player that we want Adu to be.

  13. Freddy Adu is making between 750k and 1 mil. No way he’ll be coming back to MLS anytime soon. Only way he comes back is if no other teams are interested.

  14. 4 goals in 9 games in not impressive?

Maybe not the scoring leader, but definitely doing his part to help his club get promoted and getting recognition for it.

Finally putting in work to get stronger, etc. Including heading to a training facility in Fla over the winter to kick his own a** into shape. Hopefully he stays hungary (sic) in turkey.

  15. Keep it up, Freddy. Honestly, I think you should be doing this in MLS instead of the Turkish second division, but regardless it’s nice to see you scoring goals and helping your team.

I disagree with all those here who are knocking Freddy. I think it’ll be only a matter of time before he plays himself back into the National Team picture. He just needs to get in with the right club. He’s still super young and has a tremendous upside.

  17. CALL HIM UP, BOBBO!!!!

Also he should definitely stay at the club. He’s getting play time (which he hasn’t really gotten the past 3 or 4 years) and seems to be enjoying his football. If they get promoted he’ll be playing in a top 10 league in the world which would certainly help out his standing in the national team if he’s playing regularly and scoring.

Adu, from what I’ve been told, has been incredibly unprofessional wherever he’s gone. His handlers have not helped either and European mgmt has been greatly turned off. However, this last move has likely served as a bit of humble pie. He looks much more fit than at any time over the past 24 months. At Aris, he looked thick and slow…not now. He’s clearly training hard and his teammates really like him. Again, that’s what I’ve been told and I trust my source on this.

“Should Adu stick with the club?”
    Yes.

  20. Great post with some great logic here. One thing I have noticed is that he has not grown, period. His height has consistently remained the same, which isn’t a big deal but raises the questions yet again.

  21. Adu is an extremely limited player. At his best, he had a superb touch, great confidence, excellent finisher, served beautiful weighted balls, was unselfish, excellent dribbler. But….easily ridden off the ball, no tactical sense, didn’t show for the ball, not fast, not tall, not strong in the air, not a good defender, not a good ball winner, tended to disappear in matches for up to 20 minutes at a time and poor decision-making. B/c of his skill limitations and physical limitations, he can really only play two positions for teams at a decent level of play: A-mid and withdrawn forward. Every other position requires more of him than he has ever shown (for instance doesn’t track back, doesn’t have the conditioning to play outside mid, let alone the defensive and marking ability). And then he got an inflated view of himself and went to Europe before he was good enough as an A-mid or forward to seriously compete for PT. And his salary is so big, no real team can afford to have a player like him on the reserves (which is the level he’s at for maybe the top 7-8 Euro leagues right now).

At least he’s getting PT. With that, he regains his touch and conditioning and perhaps starts to work on some of the holes in his game.

  22. I’ve been pretty indifferent about Adu throughout his career, but I never understood why he could not stick anywhere. Does he have personality issues with management and teammates, or is it an inability to track back? The guy scored 5 goals in 20 appearances for Benfica, mostly off the bench, which was a better strike rate than in MLS. What were they expecting when they bought him?

  23. That was a monster header…granted he was unmarked, but still.

If Rizespor get promoted, it’d be great for him to stay and continue to fight for time.

  24. If he manages to stay a full season and get consistent playing time, then I’ll be the first time since 2006 that he’s done that… not a bad near-term goal to shoot for… I hope that here, in the Turkish second division, Freddy’s career finally found a bottom and he can now build off this…

  25. best. highlight. video. ever.

seriously, I am happy for Freddy, he seems to have found a place to get his feet under him, after the bouncing ball of Western Europe. I have no idea if they will be promoted, frankly, cause I know nothing at all about the Turkish Second Division, but it seems like they’ve got a pretty good shot. and spending a full second season with a promoted club has to be good for the kid, It doesn’t look like he’ll ever be the superstar some predicted, but he can have a very nice career still, and Rizespor is as good a place as any to press control-alt-delete on your career.

  26. He seems to have a good amount of popularity with that team. He’s almost 22 and if they get promoted then that is THE perfect place for him.
