Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Jermaine Jones 1 (Reuters)

Blackburn gained some much-needed breathing room in its battle against relegation with its first win since January, and Jermaine Jones helped the club do so.

Jones started and went the distance as Blackburn defeated Bolton, 1-0, in a match that ended the Rovers' 10-game winless streak. Jones helped contain the likes of Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander, and now Blackburn is three points clear of the drop with three games left to play.

Freddy Adu didn't start for Caykur Rizespor in its match against Adanaspor, but he did score the lone Americans Abroad goal this weekend. Four minutes after entering the game, Adu found the back of the net with a right-footed finish in Rizespor's 2-1 loss.

Another young American in action was left back Sean Cunningham, who made his professional debut for Molde FK in the NM Cupen in Norway. Cunningham started and played 72 minutes in Molde's 11-0 mauling of Eldsvag.

What do you think of these performances? Do you think Jones and Blackburn will avoid the drop? Impressed by Adu's goal? Think Cunningham and Molde should have applied the mercy rule?

Best part about the Adu goal: How crazy those fans get for second division Turkish soccer.

  • DC Josh

I can’t believe the seasons are almost over. They have really gone by too quickly this year. Bradley is buried at Villa.

  • Brian

Ah yes, but it means that summer is coming, school is ending, and the Gold Cup is approaching (I got tix to the final).

  • Capt. Ob(li)vious

Best part about the Adu goal: when he kicked the ball and it went into the net.

  • MicahK

Bradley please just go back to Glagbach. Forget Ashton Villa, I want to see Bradley playing. Good goal from Freddy, and I hope Chandler get better before the Spain friendly.

  • Aquaman

I hope he did. It’s sad when you’re part of a blowout like that and you didn’t have any goals or any assists.

  • Matt S

Wheres the report of the “American Abroad” in Pakistan that scored one straight to Bin Laden’s head?

  • Matador

Sean Cunningham left back ?????????????????? Watch out Mr Honduras !!!

  • lprevolution

Ricardo Clark started and played 21 MINUTES in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 3-0 loss vs. Mainz on Saturday.????????????????????????????????????

  • Michael F. SBI Mafia Original

I agree with DC Josh. The season is almost over and it’s sad. But the Gold Cup will definitely fill the void. C’mon USA!

  • Matthew Barrett

Jozy Altidore: Another weekend of not getting the start and not getting a goal. Can we start calling him Jozy “Out Da Door?”

  • PetedeLA

Does anyone else wish they would list whether the game was at home or away?

    For me, it’s pretty important.

  • Joe

Did anyone watch Spector in West Ham’s loss to Man City? Which position did he play? How did he look?

Depending on his other options when the year is over, Spector should think about a return to MLS. MLS is becoming a much improved league and Spector isn’t getting any younger.

  • Andy

He played central midfield and had a solid game. He should have gotten an assist, but Keane kicked it right at the keeper.

  • Andy

Dempsey suffered a slight hamstring injury in training; that’s why he didn’t dress.

  • bryan

why didn’t dempsey play? i may have overlooked something, was he just resting?

  • bryan

hahaha of course right as i post “why didn’t dempsey play” someone clarifies at the exact same time.

  • skinnyj

actually the best part was that he took the pass intended for someone else and put it away.

  • Brad

I can’t say I’m glad that Houllier is out because of medical problems, but it could be a good thing for Bradley (and the rest of the players) if he didn’t return to coach AV. Rumors have Rafa Benitez going there…

  • DCruz-NC-USA

the most disturbing part is… Freddy Adu STILL seems to have upside. dude has played really well for rizespor. i think he should take note from charlie davies. come back to MLS play 90 min get some goals/assists and get back on bradley’s radar. he could still maybe give europe a shot in a few years when ur 25 or 26 and an improved player.

he felt no need to continue destroying that fulham scoring record! lol he is a BEAST this year.

  • OC

Seriously, it was such a great pass, I didn’t think he had that kind of vision.

  • Michael Stypulkoski

He isn’t getting any younger? Who is? He’s only twenty-five (younger than Stuart Holden, only three months older than CD9), and you’re making him sound washed-up, and after he has seemingly rejuvenated his career in central midfield.

I can’t understand people here who think that if a guy isn’t scoring every week he needs to move to a different club, league, or even continent. Why would Spector want to move to MLS?

  • Michael Stypulkoski

Junky? It wasn’t goal of the year by any stretch, but he made a good run and finished well. I don’t see how it’s ‘junky’ at all.

  • RedLine55

He had a few great (shoulda been) assists against Chelsea the week before, too. You can def see that the mid is his natural position, very effective.

@Joe, maybe in about 5-6 years. One: it would be a giant pay cut (think that Benny got 400k from MLS as a DP, Spec plays in the EPL and makes much more currently than BF did before leaving) Two: his age (only25), skill level, and versatility allow for at least 2 more full contracts in Europe if that’s what he desires.

  • Idaho Brian

Perhaps Onyewu needs to start considering solid playing time in MLS as well…

  • GW

You are assuming it is his choice to make.

Adu has about one year left on his Benfica contract which I believe pays him a lot more than any MLS team is going to want to pay him. IF that is right then why not stay one more year in Europe making big money and then come back if he wants. He’ll still be only 21-22 and be a lot more financially secure.

Besides his Turkish team seems to like him .

His recent absences have been due, reportedly,to illness, not “American Abroad syndrome”.

If this is true then he may as well stay in Europe. I don’t see to many MLS teams that couldn’t do better with someone younger, cheaper and with a lot less baggage.

  • sef-one

Every American abroad should come back to the MLS.

Everyone tearing it up in the MLS should go abroad.

Every new american abroad and anyone who is younger than 25 and has not been called up to the national team, should be. Immediately.

  • bizzy

Houllier is hurt and bradley makes the bench.
Spector goes full 90 against CHELSEA and MANCHESTER CITY in the EPL, in the midfield, at a time when West Ham is battling relegation, should say something about his form. BB should stop playing him at right back and try him out in midfield where he seems to be comfortable.
Freddy Adu just makes scoring look easy. If he can help his team advance to the superlig, he’s found his place in Turkey (FREDDINHO)

    with this line up…..

…..US Just won the Gold Cup!!!!!!
