In Reserve: Crew blasts Red Bulls, Sounders top Timbers again and more

The Columbus Crew's first-team offensive outburst was apparently contagious.

A day after the Crew broke out for three goals in a 3-3 draw with Chivas USA, the Crew's reserves posted six unanswered goals in a 6-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Monday.

Rookie Bernardo Anor and Academy player Chris Davis each scored twice, and rookies Justin Meram and Cole Grossman each found the back of the net for Columbus (3-1-0).

New York's Marcos Paullo opened the scoring in the 19th minute to give the Red Bulls reserves (0-2-0) a short-lived lead, but Grossman equalized a minute later off a feed from Meram — one of his two assists — to start the onslaught.

Here are a few more Reserve League results from the holiday weekend:

SEATTLE SILENCES PORTLAND

For the second time in 15 days, the Seattle Sounders' reserves beat those of their Pacific Northwest rival Portland.

Servando Carrasco scored off a free kick, and David Estrada scored an insurance goal in the second half to lift the Sounders to a 2-0 victory in front a crowd of almost 3,400 at Jeld-Wen Field on Monday.

After coming on as a substitute against Real Salt Lake on Saturday, Fredy Montero started and played 65 minutes for the Sounders reserves (4-0-0) before giving way to Estrada.

Eddie Johnson and David Horst each hit the post with shots for Portland (1-2-0), which fell to Seattle, 3-2, in reserve play back on May 15.

MULLAN NETS EQUALIZER FOR COLORADO

Brian Mullan scored an equalizer to help the Colorado Rapids salvage a 1-1 draw with 10-man Sporting Kansas City on Sunday.

Mullan, suspended for 10 league games for his tackle that broke Steve Zakuani's leg, volleyed home Josh Janierre's corner kick to level the score for the Rapids (0-3-1).

Korede Aiyegbusi scored for Sporting KC (1-1-2), which saw trialist Omar Colley get sent off in the 52nd minute for receiving his second caution.

DALLAS TAKES RESERVE TEXAS DERBY

Ruben Luna scored a pair of goals, and his 50th-minute effort turned out to be the game-winner, as FC Dallas topped Texas rival Houston, 3-2, on Sunday.

Eric Avila opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and Luna doubled the lead before halftime. Dynamo Academy player Chance Bergen cut the lead in half two minutes into the second half, but Luna scored again just three minutes later to rebuild the cushion for FCD (3-0-0).

Jason Garey netted a consolation goal in the 83rd minute off a feed from rookie Josue Soto, who assisted on both goals for the Dynamo (2-2-0).

UNION, TFC PLAY SCORELESS DRAW

Toronto FC goalkeeper Milos Kocic and Philadelphia Union rookie keeper Zac MacMath produced dueling clean sheets, as Toronto and Philadelphia played to a scoreless draw on Sunday at BMO Field.

Kocic received some help from out-of-favor defender Nana Attakora, who cleared a shot off the line in the first half. Toronto's reserves are now 0-1-1, while Philadelphia's are 1-1-1.

What do you think about the latest batch of Reserve results? Think Columbus' rookies should get more of a look with the first team? Think Mullan should be able to play in reserve games while he's still suspended?

  1. That’s not really the point. They get to train with the first team, learn how to be a professional and play in a competitive environment year round. None of Dallas’ homegrown players have been pro for very long so give it some time before asking if any of them have made an impact.

  2. Probably when DC United beat Columbus reserves earlier this year, with Boskovic playing the whole 90, I believe. Or, possibly when DCU’s reserves beat New Engalnd’s reserves.

    Anyone got anything more recent?

  3. 3,400 fans turned out in Portland for a reserve game. That’s very impressive; great stuff. And Montero was forced to start and play 60 minutes for the Sounders. When was the last time a DP went 60 minutes in a reserve league game?

  4. Isn’t it a bit of a joke having Brian Mullan playing in the Reserve league when he is serving a ten-match ban? He could just as easily break legs in the Reserve league. If you are going to punish the man then he should be banned from all play. After all, the reserve league still falls under the banner of MLS.

  5. Singing players right away to hgpc is not the best way to do it. Let him play a year or two in college then sign him
