Emilio Renteria netted a second half penalty in the 67th minute to ensure that Seattle didn't walk away from Crew Stadium with all the spoils.

Fredy Montero had previously put the visiting side ahead early after connecting with an Erik Friberg cross to beat Will Hesmer in the seventh minute.  Montero was later booked for persistent fouling but was joined in referee Mark Kadlecik's book by four other Sounders.

Hope was not lost for the home side, as Sounders defender Patrick Ianni brought Chad Marshall to ground in the area during a corner kick fracus.  Emilio Renteria cooly slotted home from the spot, sending Kasey Keller the other way.

The Sounders endured a Crew offensive for the closing segment of the game, but held on through a series of stout defensive work and solid saves from Keller.  Seattle boss Sigi Schmid could look at the result as a decent one given the amount of pressure applied by the Crew towards the match's end.

Highlights here.

What did you think of the result?  What does this mean for both teams going forward?  Was the Ianni penalty warranted?

  1. Didn’t look like ianni did much. At least relative to every other corner. Good result for sounders all things considered. I think they have survived toughest part of the schedule

  2. That kind of contact that drew the penalty happens on pretty much every set piece. Little bit weak in my view but it happens. Probably a fair result when its all said and done. Losing Evans in pre-game hurt, our depth will be very tested.
