SBI MLS Best XI: Week 7

Will Bruin looks like a player destined to score plenty of goals in his pro career, but he may never forget his first multi-goal game.

Bruin's hat-trick helped Houston roll to a 4-1 win against D.C. United last Friday, and earned him his first nod to the SBI MLS Best XI.

The Dynamo rookie wasn't alone among Houston's standouts to earn a place. Brad Davis made the cut as well, capping off an incredible month with another stellar effort, assisting on two of Bruin's goals.

The Philadelphia Union also enjoyed a strong week, fending off an early red card to post a hard-fought 1-0 victory. Union star Sebastien LeToux capped a tremendous effort with a clutch penalty kick while goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon and Carlos Valdes helped anchor yet another Union shutout.

So who else made the squad this week? Here is SBI's MLS Best XI for Week 7:

Honorable Mention: Jon Conway, Julius James, Rafa Marquez, Michael Farfan, Marco Pappa, Amobi Okugo, Dejan Rusmir, Khalif Alhassan, Luke Rodgers, Kenny Cooper, Marcos Mondaini.

Some thoughts:

Plenty of good options this week, particularly at forward. Marco Mondiani was stellar, and Kenny Cooper was clutch, but they didn't fit on the first team. Marco Pappa probably came closest to making the first team among the Honorable Mention selections.

Mondragon only had one official save, but his aggressiveness and organization of the Philly defense doesn't show up on the stat sheet. There were other keepers who posted shutouts, but none were more vital to the shutout as Mondragon.

A very attack-minded lineup, and obviously not one that would work practically since there's no defensive midfielder. If we were going to go with a defensive midfielder it would have been Amobi Okugo, who was clutch in helping Philly win despite going down a man early.

George John is rounding into form and, after a rough first few weeks, is looking more like the player who impressed so much last season.

What do you think of these selections? Anybody not make the first team who you felt deserved it? Who were you happy to see included?

thats a team I wouldnt mind playing against on a weekly basis

(SBI-You realize this is a group of players honored for having a good week, not a team built to play an actual game right?)

  • AlexS

They would kill in possession and picking apart other teams, if only they could win the ball.

  • XI-week 7= everybody gets a trophy rule.

I may have to agree with Roger. they may have been good… but there were better people left off this.

(SBI-I believe Roger’s point was more the fact that this team, as constructed, wouldn’t do well as an actual team. That may be true, but again, that’s not what Best XI is about.

Not enough Red Bulls for your taste there GSS?)

i know tisk tisk, who could pick a player with two first names? George John……..

Ives for whatever it’s worth it’s Morcos Mondaini not Marco. It’s nice to actually see 2 GOATS on the best XI.

  • McNulty

Get used to the Mondragon/Valdes combo here. Attack of the Bimbo signings!!

  • Pepe

He was pretty good, but he didn’t have a lot to do against DC. It’ll be interesting to see how he does against a real challenge.

I’ll never forget how Dane Richards smoked Wade Barrett a couple years ago at Robertson to knock the Dynamo out of the playoffs. I’d love to see Ashe completely shut him down.

  • Dustyn

No Honorable Mention for Jimmy Neilsen? He saved a PK and had two or three spectacular saves.

  • boosted335

George John gave up a PK on a miss-timed challenge in the box(recovering from a error by Shea) thats been the only time he’s put a foot wrong this season thus far.

So to be correct the FCD backline is rounding into form..John is always on form.

Can I get an Amen from another FCD follower.
