Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

AC Milan has been riding high atop Serie A for most of the regular season, but can finally officially lift the Scudetto today with a win against AS Roma.

Milan is seven points clear of second-place Inter Milan, meaning a win or Inter Milan tie or loss will snap Inter's streak of five straight Serie A titles. Even a Milan draw could be enough to give the club its first title since 2004.

In England, Tim Howard and Everton will look to knock off Manchester City for the second time this season, which would keep City from clinching a UEFA Champions League berth.

  1. Sure. But different leagues are offering similar money and competing for players with slim margins. It could be one of many deciding factors.

  2. You don’t give suspensions or punishment because of the result of an injury. You give out the same suspension whether an injury occurs or not. Mullan deserved a big suspension because his was nasty, reckless, and more importantly a retaliation because he felt he was fouled on the play before. When he didnt get the call he wanted, he went after the closet guy to the ball- which happened to be Zakuani. Then went on to show no remorse whatsoever afterwards by saying he would have done that tackle again.

The difference here is Mondiani got a red card because Morales was injured, he was originally given a yellow, but the ref saw the injury and changed his mind. That is not right to do. Secondly, Mondiani was incredibly sorry and remorseful the second it happened. Lets not lose our composure here kids on the message board. Think logically!

Let me ask you this, would u be asking for the same suspension if Morales wasnt hurt?? I am sure probably not. The people on here saying he should be suspended longer then Mullan just need to relax. Stop being such knee jerk reactionary psychos. It is brutal what happened to Morales and sucks for our league but lets just everyone breathe here.

  3. You offer a player a nice fat paycheck for a team he wants to play for and he’s going to turn it down because a couple guys in the league got hurt? People get hurt in every league, and in the end it’s the money and opportunity that matter.

  4. Exactly. Beckerman is also important as we saw in the CONCA final, but Javi is the engine. the team’s dynamic is totally altered now.

  5. mlssoccer.com has a clip of the tackle up. Doesn’t show a whole lot though. Cuts off right as Morales falls to the ground.

  6. These aren’t 10 year old kids. Unless he literally told the players to go break legs, a player is responsible for his own actions. Don’t make excuses for a guy who lost his head and made an incredibly stupid tackle.

  7. You have no clue…Morales ankle is completly seperated from his leg…much like Eduardo…If thats not nasty then what is?

Glad your not the one handing out suspensions…

  8. It is on him…especially when you have two red cards in 40 minutes and a team playing with no discipline/thuggery at all and then an horrendous injury because of that…

  9. No, he gave a second yellow that was warranted. He should have given a red earlier for the take down of Saborio while he was one on one with the goalie.

  10. Update:

On the RSL radio broadcast….Morales ankle is completly seperated from his leg…much like Eduardo…taken to Salt Lake Regional Medical Center….not good at all….:(:(

  11. Thta was pretty nasty. Argentine on Argentine crime right there. I would hope that warrants another hefty suspension as it was pretty un called for and reckless. Hell, it wasn’t even a professional tackle. Mondaini just dove out and sat on Morales’ ankle. So let me get this straight:

    -Ferreira (reigning MVP)
-Morales (among MVP runners up for the last 3 years)
    -Zakuani (pretty damn good too)

    Who’s next?

  12. I agree. The league now has some resources to compete globally for talented attacking players. But a reputation as an overly physical league from repeated injuries like this hurts the league’s competitiveness. After injuries like this some skilled players might avoid MLS.

  13. As an RSL fan that is sicknening….that ref has called an horrendous game and Chivas way way to physical….dirty team…

RSL radio announcer just said broken ankle…

I’m tired of seeing talented playmakers get cut down like that in this league…its got to stop…

Suspension should be at least as much as Mullen if not more as the message doesn’t seem to be getting through….

  14. should have seen Blackpool this morning…crazy tackles everywhere.

time to make examples out of guys and make it stop. harsh realities need harsh remedies

  15. I’m not trying to put this on Fraser, but don’t you think he would tell his players to chill the eff out?

  16. MLS needs to stop this kind of play… mondaini and mullan need to be made examples… 3 of the best players in MLS are out for the season, Ferreira, Zakuaini, and now javi morales

  17. Well the ref did give a soft red earlier so he was making an effort to control. However, I think MLS is paying for a buildup of years of deliberately allowing for a physical style in the league.

  18. its rare for a dislocation of the ankle to occur without a fracture (I’m not a doctor just looked info on dislocations real quick hoping and praying that was the injury)

  19. If there was any doubt that MLS refs are the worst in the world (outside of Panama), the injury to Morales proves it. The ref lost control of this game in the first 10 minutes, and Morales is the one to pay for it.

  20. Not as greusome as Mullan’s tackle. But it was clearly a desparate lunge in from behind after he was beaten. He kind of kind of lunged and landed on Morales’ back leg.

  21. Well, if any team can weather an injury like that RSL would be the team. Lots of depth on that roster. But it will still hurt.

    Reply
  22. Very curious how long the suspension will be. Not nearly as offensive as Mullan, who did a retaliation tackle. This was just dumb from behind and dangerous, the work of a hack, not a malicious hot-head.

    Reply
  23. dislocated ankle, and mondaini must have felt it when he sat on his ankle…nasty tackle.
    MLS -3

thats 2 reds in the first half of this game

  24. F*** this man. that was such a clumsy bullsh** tackle on Javi. there goes our season. This is really getting stupid. The play in MLS has got to change.

  25. Another sickening injury for an MLS player, this time it Javi Morales with what looks like a broken ankle. Ouch…

  26. Oh sh!t, Morales is down for RSL. Ugly, ugly tackle from behind and his foot came out at weird angle. I think that’s a real injury. Hate when the most talented players get hurt.

  27. As long as Borussia Moenchengladbach win against Hamburg next weekend they’ll be assured of at least holding onto the 16th spot in the Bundesliga table (1st relegation spot) which means they have a chance of staying up if they can beat the 3rd placed Bundesliga 2 team (currently VfL Bochum).

A win and VfL Wolfsburg loss/draw (or a draw and and Wolfsburg loss) means they grab hold of the 15th spot and are safe from relegation.

Ricardo Clark’s Eintracht Frankfurt are only a point behind ‘gladbach.

If ‘gladbach can stay up I wouldn’t be surprised to see Michael Bradley return next season.

  28. BTW, those of you looking to watch MLS later, mlsnet.com is doing a free weekend of their live streaming function. Much better quality than pirate feeds.

  29. Not bad for a half season loan, am sure if he was in a team with better service he’d have twice as many goals. With this we can all agree that Jozy and Adu are officially a bust.

  30. Really? Name one person over 40 playing in MLS. And there are good young, foreign players coming into the league. FCD’s Fabian Castillo, Chicago’s Nazarith, and Timber’s Diego Chara are all good young players with potential. Not to mention Americans like Agudelo, Salgado, and Ream. And its apparent you don’t know s**t about the Mexican league. The transfer value of the last Mexican champion team was some 60 million and there are some great SA in the league as well. Humberto Sauzo for example.
