Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

The English Premier League title will go a long way toward being decided today when Manchester United plays host to Chelsea at Old Trafford.

A Manchester United win would all but lock up the title for United, while a Chelsea victory would put the Blues in the driver's seat with three matches remaining.

England isn't the only place with top-quality match-ups. In France, Lyon takes on Marseille, while Corinthians faces off against Santos in the Brazilian League playoffs.

  1. And the same goes for any 2.BL or 3.BL team too. You make the MLS sound as if it is the second coming of Jesus Christ. We got a long way to go..

  2. Is it just me or have some posts on SBI become more and more idiotic / ridiculously biased in recent months? My brain is melting after reading some of the things said on here.

  3. Gimme a break. He was one-on-one with Cech after a good through-ball by Park (and a mis-timed lunge by David Luiz).

Hernandez has good instincts and great goal-scoring record so far, but I’m not going to use that goal as evidence of anything more than a tidy finish off of a giveaway.

  4. actually semi-pro should be held in less regard to acutual pro teams. fischy is right. I’ll even go the extra mile and suggest that Adu goals > Taylor’s goals.

  5. your comparing Arsenal & United with MLS teams while I just said EPL teams….put Bundesliga 2 sides up against those likes and they probly wouldnt tie even on their better form. Top EPL teams are irrelevant though because I obviously wasnt saying NY & LA are near that caliber. However, they would certainly be equal to teams like Wolves, Blackpool, & Wigan…perhaps even better. Closer to a West Ham or Blackburn.

  6. Jeez, this is some pretty shameful time wasting from United. Howard Webb lets Giggs talk his way out of a yellow card. WTF

  7. And there is the Howard Webb – United bias.

I think the United defender actually tried to catch that out of the air to stop the goal. Wow.

  8. It doesn’t matter. He’s called a clearly unbiased game. If anything, Chelsea should count themselves more fortunate than Manchester United.

  9. @ McPH; Good and valid points. However, I would offer after attending the KC-Manchester United friendly last summer, ManU was clearly not even in pre-season form, while KC was in the middle of the season (it was surely a fun match-no doubt-Bunbury was awesome-earned praise from SAF), so if we were to see an MLS club in pre-season form play an EPL club during the EPL mid-season that is a “fragile” assumption. Even when NYRB travel to Arsenal this summer to participate in the Emarites Cup, my money is on NYRB to take the trophy as they are in mid-season and great form. Play that same match in October and Arsenal wipes up NYRB.

  10. Yeah, that’s been clearly displayed by the disallowed hand ball in the box, and Ivanovic not getting a second yellow. You sure that bit of red isn’t a Liverpool uniform?

  11. Whoever said that Howard Webb is clearly in favor of Man U obviously hasn’t been watching this match. Chelsea should be down a man after Ivanovic’s second tackle on Rooney. Now they just missed a pretty obvious handball by Lampard that should have been a penalty. His arm wasn’t in a neutral location, it was raised and away from his body and was the only thing that stopped that cross from getting into the box.

  12. God watching Chelsea is painful.

All of the midfielders think they’re forwards, and none of the forwards except Drogba touch the ball.

Chelsea’s offense consists of two things.

    1. A long ball to Drogba who almost always shoves someone to the ground because he is “physical” and kicks the ball as hard as possible.

    2. A midfield player launches a 25+ yard shot.

  13. 2 Bundesliga is pretty much even with League 1 in England imo & MLS is like some League 1, some championship, & then LA & NY who could compete with bottom EPL teams so I would not agree with that statement overall. Like you said, Buddle has done well when he has been in & the manager said he only likes to use him at home games for some reason. 3 goals in 13 games is good looking at the service and support he probably gets at this club. He went from getting great service from Donovan, Beckham, & Juninho to Ingoldstadt who has a hard time measuring up to that. Buddle is my 6th favorite on the ST depth chart but he definately has a case as to why he hasnt been as succesful. I still think the transfer was a bad one & hope to see him elsewhere soon tbh.. Found it hard to believe a better Euro club didnt want him.

  14. @ Maka: Challenge all you want. It’s nice to see your pride in the MLS. I am slowly buying into MLS since moving from Germany, but am not fully sold.

Watch some 2.BL and even 3.BL matches someday and compare them to MLS, and you will liken it to technical calm vs. un-organized chaos.
